That's the world in prison." Dutton's next big goal is to make a film about his own life and those of his three co-defendants, all dead before the age of 25. His vision for the film is a hard-edged "reverse-Anertcan Graffiti" BY THE BOOK: Best-selling author Erica Jong says readers still carry a grudge against her for writing Fear of Flying. "I believe the idea of a strong woman upsets people," says Jong, who wrote five books of poetry and five novels between Flying and her latest, Any Woman's Blues. "Sexuality upsets people, and women writing honestly about what they feel upsets people. I think that I'm extremely lucky that I haven't had to go into hiding, like Salman Rushdie.

I'm lucky they're not stoning me in the marketplace," Jong said. One reader-critic, however, did send Jong a photo of her 1981 book Witches going up in flames. Mike Kelley waterway be renamed Lake Lady Bird, and the council's going to vote on it this week. Could you bear to part with the name Town Lake? (Signed) Wondering Dear Wondering: Oracle has forever thought that the name Town Lake had all the liquid lyricism of an old squash dropped from a tall building.

He thinks Lake Lady Bird euphonious, appropriate, and perhaps the last bulwark against San Antonio's moving the entire Colorado River down there for a theme park. Dear Oracle Kelley: And of San Antonio, I sing, Oracle. Get this, O-Guy. In the Alamo City, gang members now have business cards! The gang "Damage Inc." was passing them out at the city's recent Fiesta celebration. Members of the gang, who range in age from 14 to 16, are suspected in a number of assaults, auto thefts and shootings.

Business cards. Do you believe it? (Signed) Aghast Dear Aghast: Bankers use 'em, don't they? Dear Oracle Kelley: Wow dow, Oracle. Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox has issued a legal opinion saying that appointments to boards and commissions, unless they are quickly confirmed by the Senate, may not even be valid. One state official said that if the opinion stands, it could shut down state government. Scary, huh? (Signed) Quaking Dear Quaking: Just shut the whole thing down, huh? Well, Oracle has never been opposed to a little creative experimentation.

Dear Oracle Kelley: Something of a role-reversal, here, Oracle. Enraged students shut down classes at Mills College in California last week, over the president's decision to admit men. Comment? (Signed) Chuckling Dear Chuckling: Oracle is compelled to say oops, out of space. Darn. H) 1 over well of the and Newsmakers For college, it's a family affair Sarah Lawrence College is trying to keep its May 25 graduation low-key and for good reason.

Among the graduates will be actress Joanne Woodward, 60, who has been pursuing a degree at the Bronxville, N.Y., school for many years. Plus, the commencement speaker will be Woodward's husband, Paul Newman. Just to round things out, their daughter, Clea Olivia Newman, will graduate. BEYOND THE BAR: Woody Harrelson, the ditzy bartender on Cheers, is considering a day job as a singer. "I'm going to try to do an album in a few months," the young actor told TV Guide, moments after he belted out an original composition at an Earth Day rally in Washington, Best bets On the town English alternative rock band Loop, touring behind its new RCA Records album Gilded Eternity, is at Cannibal Club with opening acts Industrial Tepee and Andrew.

Dutton, who's garnering Harrelson overwhelming acclaim on Broadway in the Pulitzer Prize winner, The Piano Lesson, as well as in the film found stardom after spending nearly 10 years in prison for manslaughter. The 39-year-old actor, in and out of reform schools from age 13, ended up at the Maryland Correctional Institution after stabbing a man to death in a fight.

"You have to harden yourself to deal with all the stuff you see," he said of his prison experience. "It's commonplace to be sitting at breakfast talking to someone and all of a sudden somebody walks in and cuts his throat. And blood flies from his neck into your face, into your tray of food, John Henry Faulk is the focus of a tribute on cable Channel 40 at 8 p.m. for ACE awards (the cable industry's equivalent of the Emmys) air back-to-back on Austin Cable Vision Channel 40 tonight. The lace is on Stop by the Bass Lecture Hall of the Dear Oracle Kelley: Shocker, Oracle! Two City Council incumbents knocked off. I know that this will all become clear in retrospect, but what's your analysis? Were voters upset about the issues of the airport, the city's lowered bond ratings, municipal spending, the old controversies over the trash burner, the Sumiken Building and the convention center? You know all, Oracle. The populi has now voxed, but what did they say? (Signed) Awaiting Dear Awaiting: Oracle believes that the people have said, most firmly, that no matter where the new airport gets built, we darn sure want that $40,000 ant farm there! Dear Oracle Kelley: Oh, fairly astonishing, O-One. Dr.

Louis Sullivan, the actual United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, has sort of rather kind of said that possibly there may be too many tiny little guns out there in the land. "I am very concerned," he said, "about the high number of deaths from handguns in our society in general and certainly in the black community. I want to do everything in my power as secretary to discourage the use and availability of handguns." Mercy Maude, Oracle, is this a Cabinet secretary in the Bush Administration I hear talking? (Signed) Breathless Dear Breathless: After all these years, it turns out that Joe McCarthy was right. There are communists in the American government. Dear Oracle Kelley: Speaking of matters Republican, Oracle, it begins to appear that Mr.

Reagan's Housing and Urban Development secretary was not simply the innocent, asleep-at-the-switch. An imprisoned, former government official is now saying that Samuel Pierce led a network that contrajjled distribution of billions of taxpayers' dollars to political friends. What great fun. (Signed) Tired Dear Tired: This reminds Oracle of a Paul Newman film festival. We went in expecting to see HUD and got The Hustler instead.

Dear Oracle Kelley: Hey, Oracle, what do you think of the idea of naming Town Lake for Lady Bird Johnson?
