KLBJ is the longtime CBS news affiliate for Central Texas; KFIT is airing NBC news, and KFON recently picked up ABC news, and also runs news from the Business Radio Network. CBS is considered the leading force in commercial radio news programming, but for the listener, NBC and ABC provide comparable hourly headline service. (KLBJ is the undisputed leader in local news coverage the other stations offer only token competition.) KLBJ also carries weeknights the leading nationally syndicated programs Talknet with Bruce Williams and the Larry King show.

Williams carries on over-the-back-fence conversations with callers, and King interviews top celebrities. The station also recently added America on the Road noon to 1 p.m. Sundays. The hosts, former Motor Trend editor Mike Anson and former Popular Mechanics editor Steven Parker, conduct lively discussions concerning the auto, truck and motorcycle markets. KFON has built its daily programming around the Rush Limbaugh show.

Limbaugh, billed as a conservative comic, holds forth weekdays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A self-appointed spokesman for the right, he blasts anything and everything on the liberal agenda. He is funny, but his jokes seem mean-spirited and patronizing. His air of superiority the name of his network is "Excellence in Broadcasting" is especially hard to take since he is a champion logic-chopper, he twists contexts and makes leaps of faith that would drive a philosopher to drink.

The program is a striking success nationwide, however. Conservatives applaud him, and even liberals like to listen, it seems, if only to have someone to argue with. Following Limbaugh on KFON at 1 p.m. is Gordon Elliot, who discusses news and entertainment from a considerably more mainstream position. His rough, charming English accent is always fun to listen to, even if his subjects sometimes seem a bit fluffy.

Additionally, Sally Jesse Raphael and Tom Snyder are heard on KFON weeknights. KFIT carries no nationally syndicated programming, preferring to focus on local shows. Dan Del Santo has been quietly reshaping the Overnight program on KUT-FM (90.5) Sunday, Monday and Tuesdays midnight to 5 a.m. Del Santo, who brought world-beat Top photo by Mark Allred Dan Del Santo, top, who brought world-beat music to Austin, has been reshaping the Overnight program on KUT-FM (90.5). "When I first started subbing, it was 50 percent classical and showtimes," Del Santo said. "Now I'm giving it my own tag no show tunes and radical classical.

"What I've done is started turning toward the 20th century. I also consider Indian music and traditional African music to be classical music. Now I may do classical, or I may do no classical. The span is from bluegrass to Bartok." In addition, he will play requests. Del Santo said listeners have been spending to the changes favorably, Along with its upgrade from 1,300 to 100,000 watts of broadcast power, K-98 (KHFI-FM) has changed its frequency from 98.3 to 98.1..
