The Irieh potato crop in Washington county promises to bo a large one. They will be shipped in large quantities to St. Louis. A movement is on foot in LaGrange lo build some kind of a railroad to Lcdbetter. San Antonio has the mumps and is otherwise dreadfully swollen and puffed up in spots.

Sir. C. W. White has a contract for building and laying down a system of water works for Waco. A negro fiend at Houston treated a colored girl to croton oil in a dish of fried 'i, aud the girl is probably dead.

The rascal has been arretted. One paper cays the Statesman killed Alderman Markley. Judge Tegener, after much lehlwratiou, asserted that Mr. Nulle did It, and now the Odd Fellows and Unions have "Uetolcttl" that Divine Providence did it. The Exprm devotes a column to an exposition of modes which might be employed to prevent overflows of the Hun Amouio river.

Why not add a little more water to whisky toddies over there and thus control the Hood tide of the boisterous stream? Mr. Lockridge, of Washington county, planted six acres of wheat as an experiment. The Umi.tr is informed that the Stvtksman entertains no animus towards the Santa Fe railroad project. It would like to see the road built, but it has seen so much talk and so little work that it has lost all faith in the undertaking. Galveston, which might be saved by it, will do nothing. ISreuham will help her out of the trouble. The Galveston Journal of Commerce Fays the bonds of the Onlf, Colorado mid Santa Fe Itailroad to the amount of $1,800,000 can be sold immediately upou the guarantee of 3000 per mile local aid.

The margin is a good one, and moneyed men would do well to take hold on such terms. The bonds cover everything. Oen. Ord has applied to the proper authorities for permission to establish two new posts on the Guadalupe and head waters of the Colorado to take the place of the posts to be given up, Forts Orirlin and Richardson. The country in hich these new posts are sought to be located is represented as being a very rich grazing country aud well watered.

The demand for votes at Dallas is uueiiualed and the local excitement great. Everybody votes in Dallas, and all the tramps and roughs and galoots of the State are gathering there. A vole sells for fl to $5, and frequent sales of the same voter are negotiated. A den of tramps was broken up there la.t Tuesday and the whole body consigned to the work house. There are supposed to be twenty thousand tramps from Arkansas and the Indian Nation moving on Dallas.

If the local elections could be postponed a week or two the population of Dallas might 'jc more than doubled and all the barrooms busted. JJaylor University was chartered by the Republic of Texas April, MS. It has been said of the institution that its eleven have bcon surpassed by none in learning or punty of character and conduct. Tryon planned and named it Baylor. It has been the object of the prayers and contributions of Huck-ins and Haynes; the Alma Mater of Htribling Morrill, the Carrolls, Baniss, Keifer and Bell in the ministry of Denson, Breediove, Brown, Ewing, Alexander Barrz and Henderson of the bar, and many others, and will ever receive the earnest prayers and contributions of the constituents of the Texas Baptist State Convention.

It is claimed for this seat of learning that it has more for which to toil, that it would retain, and greater possibilities for the future than any like institution west of the Mississippi. It is certainly most deeply imleded in the affections of the "anlediluvial" Baptists of the commonwealth. Its president and trusteed propose to collect a fnd of with which to endow professors' chairs, and in this scheme partial success has been achieved. Exertions in this direction will not be intermitted. Twelve thousand dollars will be secured to complete the main building, of this sum having been already secured.

That these ends may be attained, every old student and graduate of the institution and each promoter of public intelligence und private morals in Texas should attend the next commencement of the university. JEN'GKK HOTEL, MAMO PLAZA, BAN ANTONIO, TEXAS. Ilr. MENUKR. FroprUtraaa.
