Sunday, February 18, 1990 Austin American-Statesman Texas women, Arkansas men indoor track champs are SWC die Richards' 52.76 put her almost a tull second ahead ot second-place Rosey Edeh of Rice. Nichole Ates, Michelle Williams and Barbara Selkridge finished fourth through sixth in the event to give the Lady Longhorns a 30-point lead. "I was kind of tired from running the four-by-800 relay (an hour earlier), so I'm pleased with my race," Richards said. Running from the second lane, Richards made up the stagger midway through the second turn and and coasted to an eight second win over Arkansas' Jackie Mota. "I got kind of frustrated (early in the race).

People were stepping on me and pushing me in the back. Finally I said enough of that and broke away." Tamela Saldana contributed 16 points for Texas, placing second in the 55 and 200. Texas' Michelle Williams placed first in the 200. The Lady Longhorns blew open the meet in the 400 meters, the ninth of the 14 events. Texas' San- was never pushed.

She won her neat by almost three seconds. Kellie Roberts picked up another championship for Texas by winning the 800 in 2:09.98. She led from the gun and was never challenged. The Longhorn 1,600 team of Roberts, Selkridge, Ates and Richards closed out the meet by winning with a time of 3:38.88. Mike Stulce of Texas became the first shot putter in SWC history to break the 70-foot barrier, launching one 70-feet, one-half inch.

That broke the record of By Bret Bloomquist American-Statesman Staff FORT WORTH For the Texas women, the question coming into Saturday's Southwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships was whether or not they could win without 12-time Ail-American Carlette Guidry. For the Arkansas men, the only question was how much they would win by. The answers: Yes, and a whole lot. The Arkansas men, who established a 25-point lead after Friday's triple jump and 5,000 meters, swept the first five spots in the 3,000 and the mile en route to their tenth straight title. Ruben Reina won both events and set a meet record of 8:01.35 in the 3,000.

Arkansas ended the day with 146V2 points, 80 coming in the 5,000, 3,000 and mile. Baylor was well back with 83Vi and Texas finished a disappointing seventh with 35V2. Reina and Arkansas' Edrick Floreal, who won the triple jump and the long jump, shared men's high point honors with 20 points. In the women's competition, the Lady Longhorns won their sixth consecutive title with i'27 points. Rice was second with 93.

The Lady Longhorns dominated the sprints as predicted, racking up 61 points in the 400, 200, 55 and 55-meter hurdles. But they also got an unexpected boost from sophomore Tina Hall, who won the 3,000 meters about an hour after winning the mile. Her efforts were good enough to make her the women's high-point scorer for the meet. "Tina's as gutsy and determined a runner as any I've ever coached," Lady Longhorns Coach Terry Crawford said. "That's a tough double (3,000 and mile).

She's a runner people had better start to watch out for." In the mile, Hall, whose main events are the 5,000 and 3,000, out-kicked Michelle Barz of Rice to claim the victory. "I was a bit surprised," Hall said. "I really haven't ever run a fast mile. My plan was to sit on the leader and basically go when I had to go. Terry wanted me to focus on the mile rather than the 5,000." Her 5,000 run was much different.

She broke from the pack early C7 SMU's Michael Carter (67-). The Texas men's team entered the day in second place with 12 points, but was able to muster only 23'a Saturday. Texas did have a few solid performances. Warren Smith and Scottie Miller were both part of a four-way tie for third in the pole vault at 17-V4. Lance Wilson took third in the shot put at 58-V4, while Chris Rayson placed sixth.

Derwin Hall raced to third in the 55 meters. imDmveTireufe! EVERY TIRE FOR EVERY VEHICLE ON SWT women take title Save on our entire selection of these name brands through Saturday, February 24. Texas-Arlington scored 35 of its 100 points in the 400-meter dash and mile run in winning the SLC men's title.

-m was third with 59 points. In the women's division, Southwest Texas got its narrow victory despite finishing second to Northeast Louisiana in the final event of the evening, the mile relay. The feature event of the meet was the men's high jump where Southwest Texas' Charles Austin beat two-time defending champion Brian Brown of Northwestern Louisiana with a leap of 7-534. Austin entered the meet as the nation's No. 1 collegiate indoor high jumper and Brown was right behind him.

Austin missed three times Saturday at the meet record height of 7-71, just brushing the bar with his back foot on his final try. with his two in the second. Brian Monaghan also scored twice for the Sockadillos. Austin Coach Tony Simoes said the games with Waco will be used as preparation for the playoffs against Addison, which beat the Sockadillos in their two meetings this season. "They (Addison) know how we play, and we know how they play," said Simoes, who has guided Austin to the league finals the past two years.

"We've been playing three years (in the SISL), and there are no secrets. We just have to prepare better." Saturday's victory had two statistical quirks that lifted it out of the mundane. Neither team had a player spend time in the penalty box, a rarity for the Sockadillos, who seem to play shorthanded at least two or three times a game. The Generals, not content to take a beating, added to the lopsided score when Joe Brailey scored for Austin. Attempting to get the ball back to his goalie, Brailey sent the pass high and helplessly watched as the ball bounced over his teammate and into the San Antonio goal for Austin's 11th score.

Goody's 300 ping for gas and drove his Chevrolet Lumina across the finish line seventeen-hundredths of a second ahead of Gant's Buick. Sacks, in another Lumina, was right behind Gant. Dale Jarrett, who led several times in the race and was battling with the three leaders late in the event, ran out of gas at the start of lap 118. The 23-car pileup began as the field raced through turn four on the 14th lap around the 2.5-mile oval. Brad Teague, battling Jarrett for sixth place, appeared to touch Jar-rett's car and slid sideways.

He was struck by two cars, and the three of them blocked virtually the entire track. RIVER PLACE Available only where you see the MasiorCare sign. 11 refill 1 9 9 Affordable. Steel belted. With good all-season traction mileage.

Austin, which will start a best-of -three playoff series with the Addison Arrows on March 2, has a 13-9 record with two games left, both against Waco. San Antonio's record dropped to 1-7. Normally, a win over San Antonio wouldn't count in the standings. The Generals began the season, their first in the Southwest Independent Soccer League, as a provisional team, with its games only exhibitions.
