MONDAY, DECEMBER 12,19(58 BLYTHEVILIJ! (ARK.) COURIER NEW8 PAGE THREB Remarkable Morris Lapidus Makes Hotels of 'Anthills' By DICK KLEINER NEA Staff Correspondent NEW YORK - (NEA) — The big problem is, is it nice to call somebody's hotel an anthill? Frank Lloyd Wright, the distinguished veteran architect, used that word lo describe Miami Beach's hotels in general and one hotel in particular. He did not mean It as a compliment. Morris Lapidus, a distinguished young architect who designed the anthill in question, blinks that an anthill is one of nature's finest architectural achievements. Consequently, he isn't as insulted as you mipllt imagine. "For ants," he says, "an anthill is the best place to live. It is functional, comfortable, convenient. Isn't that just what you want in a hotel?" • * . The whole business started when Wright visited Miami Beach. He had unkind things to say in a speech there about everything except the snud. sea and sun. He called things "horrible." He said the house. 1 were little rectangular pieces of land with little rectangular things on them, and said he felt it was too bad people had to i \ live in them. j * Then he went to work on the ho- i l lets, and that's when he used the , "i word anthill. | J There was much resentment in j j Miami. Strangely. Lapidus. who di- j | vides his Lime between Florida and j y New York, is the calmest of all. ;He j ^ has nice things lo say about hi Wright, about Florida, about ev-! . erything. He says he knows his ho-1.( tets—he's designed six as an asso-1 ^ ciate architect v three by himself— 1 v aren't masterpieces. ? "I doubt if I'll ever design a I j masterpiece," he says. "I don't! j think I'm a master. I'm no Frank | ,: Lloyd Wrig;-.t." | i But be docs think that, all things '• •; considered. Wright is way off base i on this. Miami Beach's hotels, he j says, are by and large pretty good, i They're functional, comfortable. j convenient. ' He poihts out that when he—or any architect—sets out to design a hotel, the first person to please is | the man who's paying the bills, the client. And bill-payers are usually! pretty eager, to save money. ; "So we always have to consider! the cost," he says. "And there are , some things you can't economize on — adequate plumbing, lighting and all those basics. You wind up economizing on the last things — the outside of the building and t'w little touches that make things beauiful." Lapidui says he always tells a new client this fact. And he warns him that it's a mistake to cut tlo\vn on these last things, because a building is like a cake — no matter how good the basic structure is. it's the frosting that makes one cake sell and another one just sit on the baker's shelf. Florida hotels are expensive — the anthill cost $12.000,000 — and i some of these architectural nice-j ties maybe cost 125,000. (Like, for example, a nice statue outside or a wall-full or mural.) Yet at the tall end, the man's who's willing to spend S12.000.000 balks at $25.000. The result? Miami's hotels —' HOTELS IN MIAMI REACH: "For ants, an anthill Is Ihe best I tec lo live."
