Scofield and Miller were due back in Austin Friday.

That is he motto of the 35 students of 3B-2 grade at Palm school, taught by Leroy Mundt. Twelve members of the grade proudly came to school ihis week with bright new shoes, provided through the Christmas Shoe Fund. Anxious to keep the new shoes spick ind span and at the same time conserve shoe leather for national defense the class decided on a shoe-shine project. Three shine boys in the class brought their kits to school and started rubbing on the polish vigorously. all 35 students have slick new shines.

It was made clear he will offer no definite commitment as to the campaign for the senate until after the first of the year.

But the intricacies of the plot are for you to discover.

The unsavory characters turned up in the hunt are more interesting, after all. Humphrey Bogart plays the part of the detective, a gentleman who finds it valuable to be distrusted. The free lancer who plays ball both with the robbers and the cops is not new to mysteries, but Bogart is not the gallant adventurer. He is a tough realist and gives an excellent performance. City Mgr. Guiton Morgan said Friday. Purchase of the two Series bonds brought the total amount the city has bought out of the fund this year to $75,000, which is all of the money that has come into the pension fund since it's collection started last Jan. 1. Morgan explained that the Series bonds are regular interest bearing securities that is, they are bought at face price and the government makes interest payments twice a year at a rate of 2 1-2 per cent Morgan also said that the city is working on a voluntary plan whereby city employes may authorize the deduction of part of their salaries each month to go to the purchase of stamps and bonds.

Send your out-of-town Enlistments Here Drop for Holidays Christmas holidays and the yule-tide rush have cut down on Austin enlistments in the army and navy, both recruiting offices reported Friday. Both anticipated a rush of applicants immediately after the close of the Christmas season. "After they go home and see their folks they'll be ready," Sgt. E.

B. Long, army recruiting officer, said. He added that he had "more than a 100" applications filed in his office that had been filled out by students who wanted to wait until the holidays were over to finally sign up. The navy recruiters expected a heavy rush Recruiting Officer E. H.

Grill said that many applicants at the navy office had promised to come around after the holidays. Grill said there would probably be a rush as big as the one the day after the war started. Enlistments at both offices had dropped below 10 a day. Christmas packages bjr Railway Holiday Fire Warning Given Precaution Urged With Decorations Austin Lawyer To Run For Civil Appeals Berth E. F.

Because the war clause of the 1940 naturalization law has been invoked, the petitions of enemy aliens will be held up for 90 days after names of such petitioners have been received by the commissioner of immigration and naturalization at Washington, stating that these petitions are scheduled for a hearing.

Usually, the petitions would be heard the latter week in January at the regular session of the winter term of federal court here. But because of the war, the petitions of 14 German, one Italian and two Austrian nationals will be reviewed by the commissioner before the hearing 90 days. This procedure is being used to enable the naturalization commissioner to enter any object en to admission of any peti-titnet. Mr. Steiner Friday also had received official notice that natives or citizens of Germany, Austria, Italy and Japan are regarded now as alien enemies under the war clause of the 1940 nationality act.

Central immigration offices at Washington also have instructed courts to adjourn hearings in cases of natives or citizens of Bulgaria, Rumania and Hungary pending a declaration of war against these countries and a presidential proclamation declaring these nationals to be alien enemies. on the part of the employes, he said, SHOP IGA'S GIANT Take Your Choice PARAMOUNT Two Fd Womnn" with Gret Gurbo und Mflvyn Doiulas. 'The Maltese Falcon' Warner Brothers picture, directed by John Huston, screen play by Huston, based upon a novel by Dashiell Hammett. photographed bv Arthur Edeson. edited by Thomas Richards, with the following cast: Samuel Spade Humphrey Bocart Brisid O'Shausrhnessy Mary Astor Iva Archer Gladys George Joel Cairo Peter Lorre Lieut. Luke Jamea Burka John Huston, who heretofore has done scripting chores for Warner Brothers, comes up with his first directorial assignment in "The Maltese Falcon," now at the State. Young Huston, son of Actor Walter Huston, has directed the Dashiell Hammett mystery with a skillful hand. Incidentally, as a good luck gesture to his son's directorial debut, Walter Huston takes a brief walk-on part in the movie. He is the captain of the Paloma who comes staggering into Humphrey Bogart's office with the bundle containing the much cherished falcon. "The Maltese Falcon" is one of those suspenseful mysteries peopled with quiet end sinister characters which depends to a large extent upon the interchange between these persons and a succession of well contrived situations.

Huston has woven these elements together nicely, and the performances are especially outstanding. The title (and by the way, don't get this film confused with the "Falcon" whodunit series starring George Sanders) refers to jewel-encrusted statuette which the Knights of Malta dispatched to Charles of Spain in the 16th century and which Marvin Hall, state fire insurance commissioner, Friday issued an urgent appeal for Texas to exercise precaution to avoid disaster and destruction by fire arising from many hazards created with decorations during the holiday season. "An evergreen tree, while relatively hard to ignite when it is growing from moist ground, when dried out becomes a serious fire hazard, in the home," Commr. Hall warned. "All Christmas trees should be safeguarded." Following Procedure In order to reduce the hazard of fire from an evergreen tree.

Hall recommends the following procedure: Buy only a fresh tree: saw trunk diagonally an inch or more above the end, then stand the tree in. water, keeping its level above the cut; sprinkle the tree branches frequently, and leave it out-of-doors until actually needed; when placed in the house the tree should be kept in water and in a room where it is as cool and moist as possible. Additional Safeguards "Christmas being a season of unusually heavy use of electricity, extra care should be used when service fuses begin to fail," the commissioner declared. "Do not use substitute fuses or attempt to bridge the fuse box, but remove some of the load from the electric outlets in the house. Play safe with all extension cords, decorative tree lights and other lights and appliances.

Be certain they are of the approved type and in good condition." The state fire insurance commissioner recommended these additional precautions during the holiday season: Watch Small Kids Bo not permit small children to handle or shoot fireworks, or to play with matches; do not allow paper, trash or rubbish to accumulate in the home or elsewhere; and "blackout" all matches, cigarettes and cigars before throwing them away; use only non-combustible materials for tree decorations. The decorations may be made fire resisting by dipping them in a 10 per cent solution of ammonium sulphate. As an added safeguard keep a fire extinguisher handy, a garden hose connected to a convenient hydrant or keep buckets of water where they can be reached quickly. Travis County Getting Supplies Priority Regulations No Trouble So Far Travis county has experienced no difficulty in obtaining materials and supplies in the operation of its business thus far because of priority regulations, according to Commr. John T.

Parker of Prec. No. 4. Parker said the only scarcity that has affected Travis county thus far is 60-penny nails used in bridge construction, but in one instance this has been overcome when a supply was secured from a local road construction contractor. Adequate Stocks The county commissioners, Mr.

Parker said, had an adequate stock of supplies before the priority regulations became effective. Orders for machinery placed recently oy the court will have delivery subject to priorities and therefore some delay may be experienced. The county has been given an A-10 priority rating and effects parts for steering gear assembly, motor parts, and final drive assembly parts in the county's automotive equipment, No Increase Yet Parker said any increase in price will be met in the regular road and bridge fund which has been set up as in prior years. "We make adjustments in our road and bridge fund as the needs arise," Mr. Parker said; "and no increase has been made to take care of rising prices of materials.

We are merely allotted a certain portion of tax revenues for the road and bridge fund, and it is up to us to spend he money in the most judicious manner possible." Friday Defense Sales Total About $30,000 Friday's sale of national defense bonds and stamps came close to $30,000. according to estimates from Austin banks and the postoffice. The American National bank reported sales totaling approximately $15,000 for Friday. The Austin National bank's sales came to about $7,000, and the Capital National Bank's sales were guessed at about the same as Thursday's, which came to $7,000. At the postoffice daily totals are not issued, but Thursday's and every day's, for that matter sales were around $2,000.

Postmaster Ray Lee said that prior to the declaration of war the postoffice sales of national defense bonds and stamps came to a little more than $10,000 a month. Since the war, he said, sales have more than doubled, which would make them about $2,000 a day. 3g0 FRIDAY, SATURDAY, tSS 6 jf MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY "CijIN 5 CfWPI jLfNo. 22 Size I ft ffuantf (ftfanll Ta2cans gf Pumpkin I HH 1M1 rr LMifAT i I gf Heavy Syrup ZjJ WJX, tff III iniM lUaTTii mill Tun in triniti I I ii 1 1 i V.
