There Mason City got a 3 55 1 last mile from Kirk Anderson and defending state 880 champion Ken Rose to edge East Waterloo in a photo finish. Both were timed at 8 06 02. Anderson got the baton about 50 yards behind East's Todd Peverill and when he handed off to Rose on the final leg the Mohawks had a slim lead. Rose then held off East's Lloyd Tims on the final curve and nipped him at the tape. Anderson had a split of 1:57.5 and Rose 1 58 3. EAST ALSO got a second from Smith in the 60. West's second place finish came in the medley relay behind Jefferson of Cedar Rapids' 3:47.8 winning time. Other winners in the 34-team event were Byran Pearson of Ames in the two-mile Dean Fogarty of Marshalltown in the 60 highs 07 46), Matt Trimble of City High of Iowa City in the mile (4:30.28) and Wes Boehm of Urbandale in the 440 51.6). About 250 wrestlers are expected for the meet. Which was set back one week from the original date. The meet will determine qualifiers for various international events. Two sessions will be held daily and champions will be determined by the international system of elimination, whereby wrestlers are assessed points or "black marks." Under that system, the wrestler with the fewest points in cch weight class is declared the champion. Wrestlers are assessed three points for losing on a decision and four if they are pinned. Winners also are assessed points if they win by decison. Only pins can give a wrestler a perfect score. The New York Athletic Club edged the Hawkeye Wrestling Club to win the team title in last year's meet, which also was at Iowa State. Sporting News names Hodges Coach of Year ST. Umpire testifies he didn't make enough to send son to college Sol "NOTHING ever came of the talks. offer girls' high school basketball. Baldridge said. Opponents of six-player, half-court competition said it hampered development of skills and handicapped players in full-court, five-player women's college basketball. PROPONENTS of the six-player rule, among them former TSSAA executive director A.F. Bridges of Trenton, said it allowed more girls to play and took into account stamina and skill requirements. "It's one of those things where either way you go someone is going to be happy and someone is going to be disappointed," Bridges said Friday. Bridges was TSSAA's first full-time executive director and served from 1946 to 1972. Bridges said he liked sixplayer rules but he cited a poll showing "62 percent of the TSSAA membership has said it favored five-player teams." And, he said, "because most states and all colleges are playing with five players, it is a logical move for the TSSAA to make." PHIIJsDELPHIA (AP A major league umpire with 22 years' experience wasn't nvakin. enough money to send his son to college, according to the lawyer representing 51 umpires in federal court. Another umpire testified Friday that he decided to get an agent because marginal baseball players were making $150,000 a year. "There are dogs (marginal players) working 40 to SO games a year," said David Phillips, an American League umpire for the past eight seasons who rejected an.of fer of $29,750 plus expenses for the 1979 season. "I'm working 162 games and not making near that. I saw they had agents." THE UMPIRES have refused to sign contracts and report to spring training because of their ongoing battle for increased wages. The men in blue have turned to Richie Phillips, a Philadelphia attorney who represents National Basketball Association officials, to represent them in their dispute with both the American and National Leagues. Lawyers for both leagues have asked U.S. District Court Judge Joseph McGlynn to find the umpires in violation of a preliminary injunction he issued last September preventing a work stoppage pending resolution of the dispute. They also have asked for $10,000 fines against the officials for every day they remain off the job. Umpire Phillips testified that over the years he had been unsuccessful in getting more money out of AL President Lee MacPhail. "It was fruitless for me to go to he said. MURFREESBORO, Term. (AP) Ending a 43-year tradition, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association has approved five-girl, full-court basketball for the 1979-80 season. Until Friday's action which came on a 6-3 secret ballot of the TSSAA board of control Tennessee girls played half-court with six-member teams. The decision overruled a 5-4 vote by the TSSAA's legislative council a week ago and left three states using six-player girl squads. The action affects about 17,000 girls in approximately 475 Tennessee high schools. "As a native Tennessean, having played support the move because we do have the talent in Tennessee to build on and now the players will be able to step right into a program," Pat Head, the University of Tennessee's women's basketball coach, said Friday. A FORMER Cheatham County High School and University of Tennessee at Martin basketball player, Coach Head lobbbbied for the rule change. "We think that it will have a positive effect," Bob Baldridge, TSSAA assistant executive director, said. "We were one of the last four states to play other than five player rules. The others were Arkansas, Oklahoma and Iowa." The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, reacting to federal actions, last year was set to challenge pressure to switch from the six-player, half-court rules. But federal officials decided to drop the action. Tennessee was among the first states to called Richie." Attorney Phillips testified about a meeting earlier this month at which umpire Bruce Froemming had asked NL President Chub Feeney to up his salary to $43,000 a year. "I'm broke. Chub, I don't have a dime," Phillips quoted Froemming as "After 22 years in baseball I can't send my son to college. I only have $1,200 in the bank. He started crying then and I did too," Phillips said. Phillips contends the injunction should be dissolved, since it's a new season and collective bargaining is no longer involved, as it was last fall. The dispute has been brewing since last spring. It came to a head Aug. 25 when the umpires called a one-day strike affecting ball games in 13 major league cities. Franklin rides Spectacular Bid to easy victory HIALEAH. Fla. lAP) Ronnie Franklin, who had to fight heavy traffic in Spectacular Bid's previous outing, had a much easier time Saturday as the early Kentucky Derby favorite ran away from a weak field for a record 14-length victory in the $149,000 Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah. "I took a look back at the quarter pole and I almost looked back again because I didn't see another horse," Franklin said. His reception from trainer Bud Delp after Spectaclar Bid won his ninth straight stakes was in marked contrast to his post-Florida Derby reception. Delp had scolded him after he had to loop around the field for a 4Mength victory over another weak group in the race at Gulf stream three weeks ago. This time Delp, who had talked of taking Franklin off the mount three weeks ago, emotionally clasped hands with Franklin as he rode into the winner circle. The 19-year-old Franklin, without smiling, shook his fist in the air and said, "Easy does it." Franklin said Delp had told him to "just forget about everything" right before the race. Spectacular Bid, starting from the outside, took the lead around the first turn and had no trouble after that. Franklin flicked him with the crop a couple of times right after he took the lead. "I kind of let him know I was on him. He wanted to wait a little bit for them, so I gathered him up and got him going again. "I was four wide on the first turn and he wanted to pull away, so I just let him go," Franklin said. A very pleased Delp said, "Ronnie handled him perfectly. Ronnie just let him breeze to the front. "He just let him run, he helped him a little bit. It was a good practice. I think it was a good experience."
