With her mother, Mrs. Bob Crosby, she visited New York for a few days recently to appear on the Ed Sullivan show and, incidentally to see her first Broadway show, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." Wonderful "It \ras wonderful," she said the morning after. "I thought Barbara Bel Oeddes was terrific. But the' one thing that worried me, if 1 were to become an actress would I have the nerve to stand in front of an audience in my slip the way she does?" The drive to wipe out illiteracy was announced with much fanfare by Red, leaders last fall. Lately the Reef press has sharply criticized the progress of the campaign. Shortly after the critticism started, the Communists announced that Marshal Chen Yi, one of the rising stars in the Red hierarchy, will head a new national anti-illiteracy assn. Chen, whose orders are to "devise ways and means" of erasing illiteracy within seven years, promptly boasted publicly he'll try to do the job in five. It'll be a job: 78 per cent of the mainland oppu- lation of half a billion-by official Communist figures—can neither read nor write. Warns Nation To Stay Alert ERIE, Pa. UP)— Rep. Joseph W.
