Austin American-Statesman Friday, September 20, 1985 F8 DC nc Killeen hoping to upstage coach's bid for 400th win Loser of Travis -Crockett faces long road to playoffs i "Ml JNJ Gordon Wood has won more football games than any other coach. By Mark Rosner American-Statesman Staff FOR AN AD night probably should not entertain hopes of postseason play. "It's a must game," Travis Coach Tommy Cox said. "Very pivotal." In other 26AAAAA games, Anderson and McCallum meet at Nelson Field and LBJ faces Austin High at House Park. All games start at 7:30.

Both Travis and Crockett are coming off victories, albeit unimpressive ones. Compounding Crockett's lackadaisical effort was its 20-18 upset of state-ranked Temple on opening night. "When something good like that happens, most young kids think they're better than they really are," Crockett Coach C. Ray Daniel said. milestone triumph, three other Central Texas squads, Round Rock, La Grange and Gonzales, will attempt to cope with state-ranked opposition.

Round Rock visits Bay City, rated fourth in Class 4A; La Grange is matched against Columbus, rated fifth in 3A; and Gonzales, off to an 0-2 start, hosts New Braunfels, ranked seventh in 4A. La Grange and both under new coaches, are off to 0-2 starts, but Round Rock has gone 2-0 under its new mentor, John Bas-kin. Bay City, which has not lost a regular season game since 1982, has beaten two 5A rivals, Lamar Consolidated and Victoria. Two unbeaten Centex 3A teams, Lampasas and Marble Falls, will face rugged 4A opposition. Lampa- By George Breazeale American-Statesman Staff People in Brownwood displayed some interest 10 days ago when Pete Rose became baseball's most prolific hitter ever.

But in Lion Country, the event comes tonight. Gordon Wood, who has already won more football games than any high school, professional or college coach who ever lived, will be going tor 400 career victories and a visiting Central Texas team, 1-1 Killeen, will be the barrier. A year ago, Coach Ricky Ray's Kangaroos threw off Wood's timetable a bit by holding Brownwood to an 0-0 tie. While Wood, now in his 41st year Of head coaching, goes for the When Travis and Crockett meet tonight at Burger Center, there will be more at stake than the mythical championship of South Austin. Travis (1-1), defending 26AAAAA champion, is trying to earn its second consecutive trip to the playoffs.

Crockett (2-0) is vying for its first playoff appearance since the school opened in 1969. There isn't enough room for both of them. The odds against two teams toppling Reagan and LBJ from their perennial spots on top of the district standings are about as good as those of Rice winning the Southwest Conference. So the loser to sas visits 1-1 Fredericksburg and Marble Falls invades 1-1 Hays Consolidated. Manor, rapidly shaping as a District 26AA favorite, could receive a stern test from 0-2 Elgin, which was expected to be a 25AAA title contender.

All six District 6AAAA South Zone teams will receive severe tests from North Zone foes. West-lake hosts Waco Richfield; Del Val-le is at home to Waco Jefferson-Moore; Georgetown hosts Waco University; Leander invades Bel-ton; Taylor visits Waco; and Bastrop hosts Waco Midway. 1 lH l' THE I DAN'S CELLARS 1327 S. Magic Time Machine Restaurant Bar 600 East Riverside Call 444-3537 A few sober reasons for indulging in a 2000 A.D. CELLAR SALE French wines have always had a well-deserved reputation for greatness. But with that reputation have come inflated prices at worst, and an exclusive, expensive image at best. The dollar's strength on world money markets, in. particular against the French franc, has made French wines the most affordable they have been in 10 years.

But the dollar's climb to its peak exchange rate of almost 11 Francs (from only 4.5 in '77) may be on a downslide, and prices of French wines have already shown some increases. But since Dan's current stock still reflects the dollar's peak strength, now is the time to buy. In addition, Dan has cut these already low prices 10 to 20, giving you even better values on Bordeaux, Graves and Red and White Burgundies. So come in and take advantage of these great prices. WHITE BORDEAUXGRAVES little more French wine.

The average wine drinker, faced with a range of wines from different countries, feels safer and more confident choosing a French wine than any other. The fact is not based on chauvinism (although we must admit that we weren't surprised when we heard it). It is based on independent research. Everything indicates that the average consumer regards French wine to be of dependable quality and good value for money. In short, the best.
