STATE NURSERY CO. KNOX FLOWER SHOP Three Boys Rescued From Mine Three teenage boys, trapped in the abandoned Spring Hill mine shaft for more than four hours Thursday, were rescued through the efforts of a Helena police officer, Jack Williams, Sheriff Dave Middlemas, Deputy Sheriff Larry Lytle and two other volunteers at about 8:30 o'clock last night. The trio, Louis and George Taylor and John McIntosh, all about 15 years of age, suffered only superficial cuts and bruises on their hands and arms from sharp rocks while being pulled out of the shaft. They were with a party of five boys and two girls, hiking and exploring in the area around the old mine shaft, located about four miles south of Helena on the Park City road. The other youths who stayed above ground were Robert Statler, Mickey McIntosh and his younger sister, and the Taylor boy's sister, Susie.

John McIntosh and the Taylor brothers climbed about 75 feet down the main shaft and then used a rope to slide another 40 feet down to a ledge overlooking 50-foot Glory Hole. The swinging and twisting rope made it impossible to climb back up, so the boys sat on the ledge and called to their panions to get help. Mickey McIntosh tied knots in the rope in an attempt to aid the climbers in getting a grip on the rope. When that didn't work he tossed down some firewood and sandwiches. Statler, going after help, encountered Sam Stewart, Jim Adair and James Thompson, who were doing some target shooting in the area.

They went back to the mine shaft to try and get the boys out, but failed. Statler and Thompson then came into town and to seek aid. They went to the police station and Officer Jack Williams enlisted the aid of two trustees from the city jail, borrowed a rope from the fire department, went to the mine. Middlemas and Lytle arrived a short time later, also bringing a rope. In a matter of minutes the boys were hoisted from the shaft.

Identification Cards for Persons Over 21 to Prove Legality of Liquor Purchases Due July 1 Additional medication for the bartender's, biggest headacheliquor purchases by minors -will take effect July 1 under a new Montana law. The law, which originated as HB456, creates a new identification card for persons 21 or over who want to they are legally old enough to purchase liquor. It also provides additional insurance for the bartender, who is liable to prosecution for selling to persons 21. After the identification card law becomes effective, according to J. E.

Manning, administrator of the state liquor control board, bartenders and tavern waitresses can demand that it be shown as proof of legal liquor-drinking age before they sell drinks to youthful appearing customers. But Manning emphasized that "it's still up to the bartender, as usual, to require proof of legal age. He still can refuse to selling drinks to anyone he wants to, card or not." The new identification card is in no way mandatory, Manning also explained. A person over 21 is not required to have one, but Armstrong Tires New and Used Check Our Prices Before You Buy! They now have a legal hook on which to hang their refusal to sell to persons appearing too young to buy.
