When Simon looking small, trifle shy. and completely unspectacular wandered out on stage the house erupted into a delirium of applause.

The same thunderous approbation was given thereafter every time Simon strummed a familiar opening chord on his guitar, sang the first words to a familiar song, or said something mildly Paul Simon is an understandably and deservedly popular songwriter and recording artist. But his live performance Saturday night fell a little flat. The older songs, like "The The audience was full of Paul Simon's fans, eager to be moved by his songs, ready to cheer him i on the slightest excuse. It's a isad comment on Simon that the slightest excuse was all he gave. Had he been an unknown, a new star, without a string of nostalgia-inducing hits behind him, he might have bothered to practice and polish his act.

Although he can make magic in the controlled production of a recording, live performances Where else can you compliment the chef and not leave your third verse. The highpoint of the evening was the introduction of jazz composer and guitarist Toots Thielemann, who generated a great deal of musical excitement in a very short time. It's a shame we didn't hear more of him. The second half of the show picked up considerably when the Jessy Dixon Choir came out to accompany Simon in a rousing, hand-clapping rendition of "Love Me Like a Rock." They remained to to perform several more rocking, soulful gospel numbers to a standing, swaying audience. Boxer" and "America" he seemed to sing chiefly out of a sense of obligation: he gave nothing new to them, and brought little feeling to his singing.

Some of his performances, as on "Me and Julio," were downright sloppy: rushed, slurred, and occasionally off-key. He showed the most enthusiasm for songs from his most recent ajbum, "Still Crazy After All These Years," yet the middle of the cynical yet bouncy "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover" dragged on' instrumentaily while he fumbled to remember the words of the ram ma a Tokyo Steak House of course. "Peeper" bears a closer kinship to the flippancy of "Charade" or "The Wrong Box" (1966) than to either more recent crime spoofs or earlier (Bogart-style) detective films. "Peeper" is a well-made and enormously entertaining film, but its particular brand of escapism is an unusual one for 1975.
