Why Austin, why now? "I have a hunch it has to do with Quentin Tarantino," Rush says from his Los Angeles home.

Though he's never met Tarantino, who's in Austin shooting "Grindhouse," the filmmakers are mutual fans. "I adore his work," says Rush, who will visit the "Grindhouse" set while here. Rush admits that "Psych-Out," filmed in the whorling colors of psychedelia by Laszlo Kovacs, hasn't agerj" gracefully. "None of it is timely anymore. All those attitudes seem like ancient cliches," he says.

Two years after "Psych-Out," Rush was introduced to Paul Brodeur's novel "The Stunt Man." He was hooked. He adapted it and the decade-long struggle to get the movie made and seen began. It took seven I've never really thought of it as a career. It was always one picture at a time. I had problems in the industry because I wasn't willing to do "big" material.

I always had something of my own I wanted to do more. If you can't serve its purpose and keep turning down its films, the industry quickly loses interest in you. That was a career handicap. It meant I did far fewer films than I could have done. I was very busy in the '60s, but later there was about five years between pictures.

It was simply a matter of choice, mostly because I had gotten hung up on the idea of doing "The Stunt Man." When, how and why did you get so attached to "The Stunt In 1970, my fir st studio picture "Getting Straight" was the best grosser that year. Naturally, they offer you more material, and they offered me the book "The Stunt Man." I had a problem with the book, but there was a metaphor in it that I found irresistible, which had to do with our confusion between illusion and reality. We seem to see the world as though we were peeking through a keyhole. We don't really know what's going on, so we make it up as we go. We invent everything, including artificial moralities.

And that's why the movie has so many "gotchas!" It's amazing how much you fool the audience. It's really making the statement that truth is a matter of the angle you happen to be watching from. It was a very calculating effort in the screenplay to make tricking the audience work right It was a difficult screenplay, but when we were done with it, I was absolutely in love with it. The studio didn't share my enthusiasm. I couldn't get the financing.

Then Burt Reynolds' picture about stuntmen came out and suddenly mine was no longer an original idea. What makes "The Stunt Man" hold up and work so well 26 years later? Well, the whole cast is delightful. That's my first major area of concern, the performances. Second is the story and third is the visuals. But always performancesfirstThat'swhyit holds up.

Also there's something about the game of the screenplay, of constantly surprising the audience about where they are. The ere and cast within the first week of shooting all caught on that there was, something special happening and they enjoyed being a part of it. Everybody was at their creative best. The film has this great spirit of fun. You can tell Peter O'Toole is having a blast.

How hard was it to get him involved? He loved it. He read it and called me up and said "If you don't let me play this part, I'll kill you." cgarciastatesman.com; 445-3649 Dessie Raspopov years for him to secure financing. Once the film was finished, it took another two years for a studio to buy and distribute it. Critics were almost unanimously explosive in their praise of the rollicking dark comedy. Heart troubles, including a heart transplant in 2002, have slowed Rush down.

Since 1980, he's directed one movie and written another, yet he is optimistic about "The Fat Lady," a political drama he wrote and hopes to irect. It's never been easy for the idiosyncratic artist, as Rush, 77, explains. You started as a busy exploitation director and now rarely work. How would you describe your turbulent career trajectory? HOLLOWAY: Couric has much experience in serious journalism Continued from Dl legendary newsman's voice will be used on the telecast, and MyNetwork's soapy start tonight Fox's new mini-network MyNetworkTV debuts tonight with back-to-back, telenovela-style soap operas weeknights on KNVA Channel 54. (The Austin station also will carry the new CW programming when it arrives Sept 18.) Here's what to expect tonight: 'Desire' (9 to 10 p.m.) Brothers Alex and Louis own a small restaurant in New Jersey with their mother.

On their opening night Louis sleeps with the daughter of a mafia boss, who burns down their home and restaurant and forces the family to flee. The brothers find work at a swanky Beverly Hills restaurant owned by a man who, un-, beknownst to them, is their father. Both brothers fall in love with the daughter of the restaurant's owner. Trouble ensues. Tashion House (10 to 11 p.m.) Pretty housewife Michelle embarks on a journey of self-discovery after uncovering her husband's infidelity and divorcing him.

She becomes a successful designer and falls in love with a painter, who happens to be her boss' son. Luke's mother Maria (Bo Derek) is not amused. Morgan Fairchild co-stars as Maria's arch-enemy. Hissy fits ensue. appearances could follow.

CBS's new anchor-star, lured away from a 15-year stint on NBC's "Today," has stirred up a ruckus since the announcement in the spring. Couric has been the glare of the limelight. But what are we getting with Couric as top dog at CBS News? Let's consider Experience: Really, Couric does have some. In fact, she covered the Gulf War while she was pregnant. After graduating from the University of Virginia, she started her career as a desk assistant at ABC News in Washington, D.C.

Next she held reporting and producing jobs at stations in Washington, D.C, and Miami and with CNN. She joined NBC in 1989 as a Penta-gon reporter and became a national correspondent before jumping up to "Today." She has covered wars, elections, natural disasters and foreign affairs. And she has interviewed presidents, heads of state and hordes of celebrities. She's got the goods, folks. Stylepresentation: Cute smile, great legs (which won't be displayed behind the anchor desk as they were on the sofas of sincerity, warmth, trustworthiness and on-camera sparkle.

She's a bit too blond now, but that's easy to fix. In a recent poll by the Pew Re- search Center for the People and the Press, respondents used words such as perky, cute, nice, energetic and bubbly to describe her. All good, though not terribly serious. Which brings us to Got gravitas? Maybe. If people can get past her giggling, perky persona on "Today," they just might be able to ascribe gravitas to Couric in the future.

This is the big unknown, especially compared with the somber Brian Williams, 47, of NBC and the comfortably professorial Charles Gibson, 63, of ABC. Even though Williams came to the NBC anchor throne from cable's MSNBC and Gibson, like Couric, came from morning TV, it's all about percep- about stuff. But that was in the mornings. Is she also someone you'd want to hear war stories from over a ni in the evenings? Which brings us to i The story we would most like to see Katie cover: A big garbage strike in New York, John Mark Karr's child por- 1 nography case in all its gruesome detail and any new wars that break out overseas. The story we would not like to see her cover: Anything that takes her on a bobsled or into the home of a hunky movie star.

Bottom line: Couric has star power, no question and likability. She's going to draw a huge crowd tonight and in the near future. Will viewers stay when the newness wears off and the news gets tough? That's the $15 million (her salary) question. dhollowaystatesman.com; 445-3608 Katie Couric Has covered Gulf War, Pentagon. on the cover of dozens of magazines, interviewed in newspapers and on TV and gracing billboards.

At 49, Couric is hardly an unknown quantity. She has, after all, been a fixture on TV for es. She got married, had two daughters, became widowed and had a colonoscopy all in tion, and there's a perception that Couric is a lightweight. Who will switch to Couric? Women still pining for her on "Today," guys who like girls next door. Plus, longtime CBS News junkies are hot likely to be driven away.

The good news for Couric is that she is far better-known and better-liked than her competitors, according to the Pew poll. She's the kind of person you'd want to have a cup of java with and chat.
