Sheriff Dave Middlemas said witnesses to the incident called his office late Saturday afternoon. They said they saw an unidentified man fall from a boat near the Indian Trail Lodge. They said it appeared the man struck the boat's propeller. The sheriff said the scene of the drowning is about a three-mile boat trip from the nearest road.

The sheriff said a number of hitchhikers in the area have been checked out, but "without results." Madison commissioners in court over food stamps Two hitchhikers reportedly beat and robbed Steven Lapalm, Butte, between Helena and Boulder early this morning, according to Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Dave Middlemas. Middlemas said Lapalm told authorities he picked the hitchhikers up on his way to Butte. After getting into the man's pickup, the hitchhikers pulled a gun and forced Lapalm to turn back toward Helena.

Lapalm said the men pulled him out of the car, beat him, and took $12 from his wallet They then drove off in Lapalm 's vehicle. Middlemas said the pickup was found this morning on old Canyon Ferry Road. It had been driven into a borrow pit and had to be towed to Helena. Middlemas said Lapalm was found by someone driving a jeep and driven to Helena. He said the unknown driver of the jeep took the man to the Helena Bus Depot Later two youths found Lapalm leaning against a telephone pole near the Junior High School and took him to St Peter's Hospital.

Hospital officials called the sheriffs office. Middlemas said a search is continuing for the two men, but cery orders to persons receiving food under the commodity foods program, and are paying for the service with county funds. Carkulis said Montana is in danger of losing its federal food stamp certification because of lack of uniformity in the welfare program. He said the state had not established a state food stamp program as required by federal law. Raymond and Morgan said they prefer the commodity program or direct grocery purchase orders over the food stamp program, and would not take it over.

FORSYTH (AP) Law enforcement personnel in Rosebud County took to the Yellowstone River between Miles City and Rosebud in boats late Saturday in an effort to find some trace of an attractive Forsyth woman missing since Thursday. The Rosebud County sheriff's office said Peggy Harstad, 22, was last seen leaving the home of a relative in Harlowton July 4. Miss Harstad's empty automobile was found early Saturday on an abandoned stretch of highway about 10 miles east of Rosebud.

The sheriff office said her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Harstad, reported her missing Friday night. County residents said they had no doubt the attractive young woman had met with foul play. Another Forsyth woman, Mrs.

Frances Ewalt, 24, has been missing since Aug. 19, 1973. Her mother recently posted a $500 reward for information about the woman's whera-bouts and contending she, too, had met with foul play. Lewis and County Sheriff Dave Middlemas says that foul play also; is suspected in the two-week-old disappearance of John Monroe Russell, 24, Helena. Rosebud County Sheriff James V.

Schiffer said officers were directing a search over the river downstream from the spot where Miss Harstad's auto was found on the old U.S. 10, now replaced by a freeway and largely unused. The finding bore haunting similarities to the disappearance in February of 19-year-old Sandra Dykman Smallegan, a Manhattan woman whose remains were found a week after she was missed fol- COLOR TV Senior citizens will have a card party Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Neighborhood Center.
