The commercial station, which is not affiliated with a network, will begin broadcasting at 6:30 p.m. with opening ceremonies and the movie "Cleopatra." starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. General manager Steve Beard said the station will show 25 movies a week and broadcast 18 hours a day. KBVO will operate from a new studio with 14,000 square feet at 10700 Metric Blvd.

in North Austin. Two years ago, the Federal Communications Commission approved the application of Austin Television for ownership of the last UHF television station in Austin. Beard, a former advertising sales representative, owns 15 percent of the station stock. When Austin Television began to select its programming. Beard said, the company hired an advertising agency to find out what Central Texas viewers wanted to see.

They asked for more movies and more country and Western music programming. SO IN ADDITION to showing at least three movies a day, KBVO will air such programs as "Pop Goes Country," "Music City USA," "This Week in Country Music" and "Hee Haw." The station will also show reruns of "Charlie's Angels," "The Rockford Files," "Soap" and "The Munsters." KBVO Initially will not have as many commercials as there are on the Austin -network-affiliated stations KTBC, KTW and KVUE. The other Austin sta-; tion is KLRU, a Public Broadcasting System affiliate. Most companies have already spent their advertising money for the fourth quarter of this year, Beard said. i mi challenge," said Fisch, who worked at a Houston independent television station, KTXH, before coming to Austin. Fisch said the 2.5 million watt signal of KBVO will reach 590,000 homes in an area bordered by Waco to the north, Victoria to the south, Bryan to the east and Brady to the west. KBVO will not offer extensive news coverage. Beard said. The station will have a headline news service several times each day.

"We feel that if people want to watch news, they can turn on the other channels," Beard said. "We want to offer alternative programs. When the other stations are broadcasting news, we'll be showing entertainment." KBVO will air public affairs programs Winston Bode's "Capital Eye" and "Pulse," with Carolyn Jackson. Viewer battle looms, Show World ledging stiff competition from other Austin stations, he said that once KBVO signs on and develops an audience the advertising dollars will follow. Beard also thinks the station movies will hold their own against movies shown on cable channels like Home Box Office, Cinemax and WTBS.

Steve Fisch, public relations director for the station, said the biggest problem is getting people to associate KBVO with Channel 42. The Spanish International Network has been on Channel 42, Fisch said, but moves today to Channel 30. On the Austin Cablevision lineup, KBVO will be on Channel 5.
