That was on Dec. 29 The District 5 winner advances to the NAIA tournament in Kansas City, March 13-18. Last year Carroll represented the district, winning from Bethune-Cookman (Florida) 91-88 but losing to Grambhng of Louisiana 95 86. Grambhng eventually placed third in the national meet.

The Carroll College Fighting Saints basketball team, one of the best in the school's history, ranked among the nation's 40 best small college teams according to statistics released by the NAIA. Winston Salem State of Winston Salem, N.C., took the top spot, receiving 12 of 20 first place votes and 243 points. Tony Sapit. Carroll's leading scorer and rebounder, is ranked tenth in the NAIA small college rebounding poll. Sapit has played in 22 games this season, hauling down 385 rebounds for a 17.5 take-down average per game.

In the scoring department, Sapit has scored an even 500 points in 22 games for a 22.7 average per game, ranking 57th in the nation. Sapit broke the school's all-time scoring record this season, when he dropped in his 1.240th point against Western in January. ship for the Saints, who have a 20-6 overall record.
