The phone coaiprmy Installed three lines. The merchants advertised the number. Calls came in such tremendous quantities, the phone company said, that 1,000 of this university town's 13,000 phones were "frozen"— useless for cither incoming or 'outgoing calls. Four more social lines were installed direct to Santa. And the phone company appealed to the public: "Have patience. Please call but don't lot the children call flve or six times In one night." Old Theft Charge Is Dismissed LOS ANGELES (/Pi— A grand thiift indictment returned 18 years ago against Earle Hall Gordon has-- dismissed. Gordon was Indicted In 1937, charged with the theft of $14,234 from a Santa Monica market, he managed, but which now is out ol business. He never was brought to trial. The market went through bankruptcy, and Its records evijji- tunlly were destroyed. Several persons connected with the case have died and possible wltneuN KM- tered. Cordon was arrested on the oM warrant last Oct. 34. Neither tht district attorney nor the sheriff '• office opposed the motion for dluni*- sal yesterday nor was any explanation given In court u to why Oof- don was not prosecuted.
