E3 Austin American-Statesman LIFE ARTS Tuesday, October 30, 2007 HOLLOWAY: High-definition compatability requirement drawing near iV-' Mir.rn.rmmnnn quality because the signal isn't squeezed the way it is on cable. But the difference is slight, and cable subscribers might not want to switch from cable to broadcast and install a separate over-the-air HD antenna. KEYE started its HD news journey in 1999, when it was owned by CBS. In February, the station was sold to Cerberus Capital Management LP, a private equity firm. Through ownership and management changes, tech guru Granberry and chief engineer Arthur Smith have been buying, installing and tweaking the multimillion-dollar HD transition.

In two days, HD-ready viewers finally will see the result. Ron and Judy are ready for their close-ups. dhollowaystatesman.com; 445-3608 picture," says Oliveira, who admits he was nervous about what he would look like in HD, but was pleasantly surprised by the result. "It's not as harsh as what the analog signal shows now," he says. High def to affect us all As the February 2009 deadline approaches, local stations will speed up HD productions, and cable and broadcast networks, which already produce most of their shows in HD, will complete the transition.

Confusion, and maybe even a little panic, likely will spread among the viewing public. Right now, people who have HD sets (wide-screen rectangular TVs with a 16-by-9 ratio, as opposed to the more square 4-by-3 ratio in analog TVs) can receive HD programming a couple of ways: over the air or through cable and satellite service. Either way, you need an HD set or an HD converter for your analog set. The cable industry has been at the forefront of the HD revolution, offering HD service to its digital subscribers. Time Warner Cable by far the largest cable supplier in Austin, estimates that about a third of its 300,000 local subscribers now have HDTV.

Broadcasters say that over-the-air HD offers superior came to KEYE for several consultations. She steered Maggio away from dark liquid eyeliner and toward a softer pencil. Both Maggio and Oliveira have gone to darker shades of foundation because of the brighter HD look. Yes, they buy and apply their own makeup. Oliveira, 51, says he's still not used to going into a store to buy mousse foundation, but he's happy to get out of pancake, which he now calls "analog makeup." The image consultant also suggested Maggio change her hairstyle a bit.

"It's softer curls, not so much a bob look," she said. "Whether I can pull that off on a daily basis is another question." Not surprisingly, both of these HD-ready anchors have fully equipped HDTVs in their homes. Maggio says the first thing she and her husband, Thad Rosenfeld, bought after their house burned two years ago was a 50-inch plasma television. "It's built into the living room wall, and it's a focal point," Maggio says. "I'm not sure whether that's tacky or not." Oliveira has a 42-inch plasma HDTV in his bedroom.

The living room, he says, is reserved for stereo equipment. "It's really a stunning Continued from El on-camera folks, and that's even more important in HD. "A diamond tiara might be a little over-the-top," Maggio said, laughing. Vive la difference The HD difference in the broadcast of local news is surprisingly subtle, especially considering the time and money that goes into the switch. And the changes will not be seen immediately through the entire newscast.

Reports filed from outside the KEYE studio, as well as some of the fancy weather maps beamed from inside the studio, will be in standard definition. The dark bars on the sides of a wide-screen home-viewing of those shots will be filled with "flags" identifying "KEYE weather" or "KEYE News live." NBC's "Nightly News" and ABC's "Good Morning America" do the same thing. But a majority of Central Texas viewers will see no difference. There are no hard figures, but anecdotally, about 25 percent of viewers here are believed to have HD-capable sets. That percentage is growing rapidly.

"We still have to operate for people who don't have HD," says Dusty Granberry, KEYE's director of broadcast operations. "It's an ongoing project, and the challenge is to do it and still be on the air every day. It's like changing a tire on your car while you're driving down the freeway." process, to people who cannot afford them. Last year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association, more HDTV sets were sold than analog. Analysts expect that by 2010, 82 percent of all TV households in America will have HD-capable sets.

(The rest, presumably, will have converter boxes.) During the 2006 holiday shopping season, the average price of an HD set had dropped from several thousand dollars to $1,400, with plenty of smaller models available for $500. Most cable and broadcast networks produce prime-time programs in HD, and local stations are forking over big bucks to follow suit. Local news on KVUE, KXAN, KTBC, News 8 and Univision KAKW will switch to HD within the next year. A softer look in store While the technical buildup to HD has been time-consuming and complex, preparation has been relatively simple for KEYE's veteran anchors. "It's been mainly adjustments to our hair and makeup because the camera picks up so much detail," said Maggio, 47.

"In the past we used pancake makeup, but this is a lighter, softer look. And you can't use tons of hair spray because you wind up with a shiny helmet head." Brazziell AMKKICAN-STATKSMAN Dusty Granberry, KEYE's director of broadcast operations, says the challenge is making the switch to HD while still serving those who don't have it. Why the switch to HD? Because the federal government owns the analog signals currently used by broadcasters and will take them away on Feb. 17, 2009. Some of the analog signals will be retained by the feds to improve emergency communication but the rest will be sold to private commercial bidders. The date has been pushed back several times but is expected to hold firm now, so it's best to get ready.

People who do not have HDTVs or HD cable will need to buy $40 converter boxes for their old analog sets by 2009. Government subsidies will be provided, probably through a cumbersome application Cyndi Williams, Helen Merino, Barbara Chisholm and Jill Blackwood. But she's cornered the market on movie-ready scruffy twentysome-things with cheekbones, overheard trading trade secrets at the Mohawk on Friday. (Photos, as always, at austin360.comoutand about.) The noise of joy said it all. The familiar twangs of the Tuna characters and the equally familiar gales of laughter wafted to the upper lobby during the opening night of "Tuna Does Vegas." "It's good to be home," said Joe Sears, one half of the Tuna creative duo, during the short post-show party.

"But don't tell Houston. And don't tell Washington. And don't tell Galveston." "It's especially good to be home when you've lived in hotels for 24 years," said Jas-ton Williams, the other half of the team, both beaming over the first-night performance and response. Responding to the skimpy spread, Sears blurted out: "Where are the pretzels?" The Allandale Masquerade Ball was everything you'd expect from a neighborhood holiday shindig rootsy Austin band, endearing capers on the dance floor, kooky costumes and folks of all ages making only slight fools of themselves for a cause: covering legal expenses for their high-profile fight over redevelopment of Northcross Mall. (Would something like the Domain have been better? Who will know?) Two standouts: A tango demonstration by Allandale resident Laura Pellegrino and her consort, Ector Gutierrez, plus the savory and sweet edibles from big-hearted Russell Millner and Alan Kirkhart of Russell's Bakery.

These longtime Aus-tinites know where the local culinary bodies are buried. Their conversations are like ongoing stand-up comedy routines, one finishing the other's sentences, debating limitless cultural points in good humor. Appearing in tandem, they pass along the wisdom of seeing free movies back-to-back, eating up to five huge buckets of popcorn, ripping through multiple reviews at 4 a.m. and fearlessly taking on any journalistic assignment, even reporting about fashion on the Drag.
