Arrangements with Porter Loring, 1101 McCullough, San Antonio, TX, (210) 227-8221 Mable Charlotte Mann, 94 After a long life of unconditional love, hugs and laughter, Mable Charlotte Mann died peacefully of natural causes September 26, 2003. All who knew her will miss her tremendously, remembering her kind, sweet nature and strong spirit. Mable was born February 8, 1909, in 1 Chicago, to Swedish immigrants, William Knute Strand and Anna Wilhelmina Anderson Strand. She grew up with two brothers and a sister on the family farm in Monmouth, Ill. She was married at the farm house to Frederic Byron Mann on October 7, 1936.

As an Army officer, Fred Mann led his wife on a life of travel. The couple had a son, James F. Mann, and a daughter, Lynette, before Fred was called to active duty. Fred served as a colonel in the Pacific during World War II, the post World War II Occupation Army in Europe and the Korean War. When Fred "The as he was known, was part of the occupational army in Europe, the couple had a second daughter, Cynthia, in Munich, Germany.

Over time, military life took the Manns to different homes in California, Minnesota, Indiana, New Mexico, and finally, Austin, Texas. Mable was a woman of subtle contrasts, going back to her youth. She was an adventurous person who reveled in riding horses bareback on the family farm. Yet, she was formal; at one point she taught elocution to young ladies. By most accounts, she was a sorry sewer, but a dandy cook, specializing in candies and sweets.

She was proper, wearing dresses through most of her life, but she took up pants and bowling in her 50s, and was avid for the sport. She was also a shrewd bridge player. Mable was raised hand-in-hand with the Lutheran Church, and carried a strong faith in God through life's joys and adversities. As a military wife, she was proud, patient and persevering, often having to be the family's nurturer and disciplinarian while her husband was away. Even when the Colonel was home, Mable exerted a strong, quiet influence over the family.

She was very observant. She didn't interfere unless she felt it was necessary, recalls her daughter, Lynette McCrary. But she always knew what was going on, even when we thought she didn't When mother felt strongly about something, she spoke strongly. And there were times when my father capitulated. She was a very righteous person.

But at the same time, Mable had an enormous sense of humor. She had a penchant for saying funny little things at just the right time. In Memory of Kevin Benton Feb 26, 1958 Sept 29, 2002 In life we loved you dearly In death we love you still, For in my heart you hold a place The world can never fill. It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn't go alone, for part of me went with you, the day God took you home. We love you and miss you.

Arrangements by Forever All Faiths Funeral Service-North, (512) 339-8878. Billie Ann (McConnell) Lopez Margaret Binion Billie Ann (McConnell) Lopez died suddenly and unexpectedly Saturday, September 13, 2003, at her country home outside Vienna, Austria. She was 59 years old. A memorial will be held Monday, September 29, 2003, 4:30 p.m. 6:00 p.m.

at the Laguna Gloria Sunken Garden, to the right of the entrance gate. Her ashes will be buried in Vienna, Austria, on the same day. Billie Ann was born in 1944 in Kansas. She first came to Austin in 1964 to attend the University of Texas. In the early '70's, she worked at Travis County Legal Aid 8 Defender Society as a paralegal and community advocate.

Billie showed great kindness to the families with whom she worked. Her clients and co-workers became her friends. In the mid-70's, Billie left Austin to travel the world, trekking overland from Europe to Central Asia. She traveled alone through Nepal into the Himalayas, and returned by way of India. She later spent several years in York City working at "Newsweek" as Jane Bryant Quinn's personal assistant; and she was acknowledged in Quinn's work, Everyone's Money Book.

It was in New York that Billie Ann met her great love, companion, and partner for twenty-two years, Peter Hirsch. She and Peter made their home in Vienna, Austria. They traveled extensively together and wrote "Travelers Guide to Jewish which reflects a thousand years of German Jewish life and culture within the Jewish sites that survived the Holocaust. The book is available on Amazon.com. Billie Ann flourished as a freelance journalist for many years, writing articles for a number of worldwide publications.

She ran a writer's group in Vienna for many years. She was 3 contributor to Virtual Vienna.net, an English-language website dedicated to Vienna. She wrote a regular column entitled, "Through Billie Ann's dealing with many subjects close to her heart. A tribute on VirtualVienna.net last week contained a poignant quote from Joseph Roux: "We call that person who has lost his father, an orphan; and a widower that man who has lost his wife. But that man who has known the immense unhappiness of losing a friend, by what name do we call him? Here every language is silent and holds its peace in impotence." For those of us in the States and here in Austin, these words ring true.

Billie's eloquence, caring, intelligence and love of life enriched us all. Her spirit remains in the abundance of letters, e-mails, and memories she has given to so many. Peter Hirsch requests that memorials be made through the Children's Bridge of Hope, an international society for abandoned children. In the U.S., checks should be made to the Family Care Foundation and forwarded to Children's Bridge of Hope, Mariahiferstrasse A-1060, Vienna, Austria. On-line donations can be made at http:/www.familycare.org with the notation, "Children's Bridge Families in Grief, a free ten-week program for parents and children presented by Hospice Austin, offers support and healing to families who are dealing with the loss of a loved one.
