Two of the 17-hour flights will be to the Persian Gulfs Bahrain, the carrier's hub, with a stop but no change of planes at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Page said the service will attract Houston business people who currently must change planes when flying to the Middle East Mayor Bob Lanier said securing single-plane service between Houston and the Middle East has been one of Houston's top air service development goals because of the energy links between the two areas. "Houston is pleased to welcome Gulf Air, the only Arab carrier serving the city," Paul Gaines, director of aviation for Houston, said in a statement Air traffic between Houston and the Middle East has grown an average of 14 percent annually since 1988, according to Gaines. Selena trial may put more Hispanics on jury duty Associated Press HOUSTON Interest in the Selena murder case will be used to launch a public awareness campaign aimed at getting more Hispanics to participate on juries, Harris County officials and a civil rights group say.

District Clerk Charles Bacarisse, whose office coordinates juries, said he will team with Saldivar the League of United Latin American Citizens and its local leader, Johnny Mata, to stress the importance of serving on a jury. "LULAC has expressed an interest to partner up with my office to show the importance of jury selection in the Hispanic community," Bacarisse said. "With the conclusion of the Yo-landa Saldivar trial in the Selena case, this would be a good time to promote greater awareness in the importance of jury service." Saldivar's trial ended this week with the former Selena fan club president sentenced to life in prison for the Tejano singer's March 31 shooting death. The trial gener-; ated a huge following in the Hispanic community. Although details are still being worked out, the awareness campaign could take the form of meetings at community centers to explain the civic responsibility of jury duty, officials said.

The meetings would be Conducted in Spanish and English. Bacarisse and Mata have been at odds over the practice of referring prospective jurors lacking proficiency in English to language classes. Mata said he received complaints last month from some Hispanics who reported for jury duty and asked to be excused because they lacked fluency in English. Instead, court clerks told them that a judge would order them to attend English classes or be fined. The clerks then rescheduled the Hispanics, as well as some Vietnamese with similar language problems, to return to court in 12 weeks.
