The Louisville Cardinals scored from 80 yards out on the second play of the game Saturday, and from there it was off to the races. In the shadows of Churchill Downs, Texas probably should have expected as much. This was no horse race, however, as the plowhorse Longhorns never came close to reining in 24th-ranked and unbridled Louisville and were ridden hard 41-10 in their most disappointing performance of the early season. Perhaps out of boredom, the Cardinals, who led 24-0 at halftime, mustered only 17 points in the second- Texas falls to its lowest level yet LOUISVILLE, Ky.

Louisville? Basketball-dribblin', baseball-park playing, no-football-tradition Louisville? Yep. That's the brutal reality. The 41-10 score isn't a misprint, and it wasn't a fluke. All we can hope is that it will serve as a wake-up call for a team that should be embarrassed to be outclassed this way. Saturday a quicker, smarter and hungrier Louisville team dunked on a Texas squad that barely bothered to show up.

The only time the Longhorns looked good in this town was in the hotel lobby. At least the team dresses nicely. Unfortunately, the Longhorns didn't look so good in pads. Lou-See Pathetic, E6 half, sparing Texas one of its! worst losses ever. As it was, the; 31 -point margin was one of the most thorough and John Mackovic's worst in his 14 games at Texas.

"Good teams should do that. Hopefully, one day we'll look like that. We didn't play well in any phase of the game." Louisville (4-0) all but dissected Texas, scoring on six of its first 10 possessions and missing a 36-yard field goal on one of the series. The Cardinals ate up 560 yards of offense for a 6.7-yard average on a soggy afternoon in front of 38,492 at Cardinal Stadium. Offense-poor Texas was so discombobulated, it eked out a bare-bones 74 yards of offense in the first half and replaced starter Shea Morenz with junior quarterback Chad Lucas, who threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Lovell Pinkney.

The Longhorns managed just 237 yards of offense a paltry 89 rushing and their 10 points were just three more than they gave up on defensive tackle Jim Hanna's 15-yard touchdown return of a midair fumble recovery after Morenz was blindsided by Joe Johnson. "We played a little harder than they're used to," Hanna said. "I thought they were quitting. They were ready to go home probably in the second or third quarter. And that's why Kansas City's George Brett, his ticket to the Hall of Fame long tucked safely in his pocket, said Saturday he's calling it quits after this season.

"My brother Bobby asked me last Monday how much money it would take for me to play another year," said the 40-year-old Brett, choking back tears at a news conference. "I told him they don't have enough money. "The game became a job, not a game anymore. The game shouldn't be played that way." And certainly Brett never did. You never caught him jogging on a ground ball, but you could see him get his uniform dirty stretching a single into a double.
