Part of Letterman's deal when he jumped ship from NBC to CBS was the right to choose the show that follows I TMuMii i "iH" which is very funny and a little bit raw. The next time 60 Minutes producer Don Hewitt huffs, "We don't do rock stars," we can laugh in his face.

On Sunday's edition of the venerable news magazine (at 6 p.m. on KTBC), reporter Ed Bradley travels to New Orleans for a heart-to-heart chat with venerable rockers the Rolling Stones. The show and the group are roughly the same age. When 60 Minutes debuted 27 years ago, the Stones were one of the most popular rock 'n' roll bands in the world and had already been in existence for about five years. Mick Jagger and chums are certainly worthy of a segment on 60 Minutes.

Maybe this is a signal from Hewitt that the show is ready for an ever-so-slight shift into popular culture. Nothing wrong with that. his show in late-night television. That was in addition to the $40 million contract he secured with CBS. Although his new network report Diane Holloway and several other now-popular shows.

"We're still coming up with different ideas," Oliveira said Thursday. "We'll do some Spanish-language programming as well, and not relegate it to 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning, either. We want to address the diversity of our audience." When KNVA switches from weather to entertainment, it will acquire a cable channel, too, Cable 12. Under a three-year agreement, KNVA also will continue to share office space and technical expertise with KXAN Channel 36 Cable 4. Cable subscribers who have HBO and Showtime will have a tough choice to make this weekend.

On Saturday night, two entertaining women have their own specials. Whitney Houston's concert swing through South Africa will be captured by HBO in a performance before 70,000 people in a soccer stadium in Johannesburg (at 8 p.m. on Cable 60). Among the songs scheduled to be included are Savin' All My Love, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, How Will I Know, I'm Every Woman, The Greatest Love of All and, of course, Dolly Parton's Will Always Love You. Showtime, meanwhile, serves up a comedy performance by stand-up-turned-sitcom star Brett Butler (at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday on Cable 1). Butler's material on her ABC show Grace Under Fire is tame compared with her stand-up, Ron Oliveira, KNVA Channel 54 general manager, plans entertainment programming to start Jan. 9. like owns the show. Austin's new independent station KNVA Channel 54, which arrived in late August with 24-hour local weather, has signed on as an affiliate of the new Warner Bros.

Network, which calls itself a network even though it will start with only one night of programming. For the record, that's also how Fox started in the late '80s, and it's doing just fine right now, thank you very much. Former Channel 24 anchor Ron Oliveira, now KNVA's general manager and part-owner, said he expects to have his station up and running with entertainment pro- HBO airs Whitney Houston's concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, tonight at 8 on Cable 60. gramming Jan. 9, when Warner Bros, is scheduled to debut.

In addition to the one night of Warner Bros, programming, which will be broadcast Wednesdays, KNVA will carry movies, first-run syndicated programming and other shows to fill out a full seven-day, morning-to-late-night schedule. Oliveira said Warner Bros, hasn't decided what it will air on Wednesday nights, a spokesman for the network said several pilots are being considered. Fox started with The Joan Rivers Show, which was canceled early on, and expanded to Married With Children, The Simpsons Veteran late-night host Tom Snyder returns in January to follow CBS's Lafe Show With David Letterman. row, which debuted on NBC in 1973 and ran for nine years. Before that, Snyder had other broadcasting assignments, including radio shows and political interviews for TV and radio.

More recently, he was host of a popular talk show on NBC's cable network CNBC. The new Late Late Show will "showcase timely conversation with entertainment personalities and newsmakers," according to CBS. Letterman's longtime executive producers, Peter Lassally and Robert Morton, will be at the helm of Snyder's new show, and Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants Inc. (who else would name a company something edly argued for a younger, hipper show, Letterman, CBS's 800-pound gorilla, prevailed in his desire to give Snyder another crack at late-night television. Letterman has often sung the praises of Snyder, who he said he believes is intelligent, amusing and provocative.

Snyder is not likely to turn up on Austin's CBS station, KTBC Channel 7 Cable 2, right away, because the station is running the syndicated Jon Stewart Show in the time period after Letterman. But maybe when CBS's local affiliation switches from KTBC to KBVO Channel 42 Cable 5 sometime in the spring, Snyder will be available.
