Austin American-Statesman Entertainment Tuesday, November 25, 1997 E3 Considering how badly 'Pop' has stiffed, the newer material was well-received, especially 'Gone' near the start of the show, 'Please' near the end and 'Staring at the warm reviews, "Pop" also failed with radio and with the fans, having already exited the Billboard' Top 200. Meanwhile, the band forges ahead with the ill-advised "Pop-Mart" concept, which finds them performing under a golden arch, from inside a giant disco ball and in front of a spectacular video screen as some sort of commentary about crass commercialism. How ironic. Before they came on, you looked at that ridiculous staging and it seemed as if the band members' wacky sense of cool had finally gotten the best of them. Suddenly, the "Fly" glasses of the '93 Zoo TV tour seemed understated.

At one point in the show. Bono had changed into military garb, and with the Edge wearing a big white cowboy hat and bassist Adam Clayton sporting some sort of gas mask contraption, the band did indeed re- semble the post-punk Village People. i But at the same time, the Edge's ringing guitar strokes over the glorious pound of drum-, mer Larry Mullen and Clayton's taut bass lines proved that U2 can bash their way out of any fashion miscues. Plain and sim- pie, U2 is a majestic band that knows how to play the room, whether it's the old Club Foot or the Alamodome. 1 Era 4 it GATTACA 7:00 KISSthe GIRLS 9:30 TGODZILLA Considering how badly "Pop" has stiffed, the newer material was well-received, especially "Gone" near the start of the show, "Please" near the end and "Staring at the Sun," during which a grainy photo of INXS singer Michael Hutchence, who had committed suicide the day before, was projected on to a video screen.

But it was the old faves such as "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (dedicated to Hutchence, whom Bono called "a great friend and a restless "New Year's Day," "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and "With or Without You" that drew delirium and majestic singalongs. "Thanks for sticking by us," Bono said before ending the show with "Wake Up Dead Man" (about Jesus, not Hutchence) and it seemed like a strange thing to say after being worshipped for more than two hours. But in relative terms, U2's not having a great year. After receiving luke- Fast, Cheap a cLnAainii 45 Out of Control gmgr rATTArt Repulsion tet? 4:30 9:40 Austin Power; midnight. SMOKfS mm Adoring crowd revels in supergroup's Alamodome performance By Michael Corcoran American-Statesman Music Critic SAN ANTONIO Universally known as "the Irish supergroup U2 is one of the most popular rock bands of all time, springing from scruffy punk clubs to arenas and then to stadiums in its first 10 years.

But at the Alamodome on Sunday night, in front of a roaring, waving, clapping, stomping crowd of 30,000, singer Bono and his three cohorts seemed to still have something left to prove. They approached the stage from the back of the crowd like prizefighters descending into the ring. Then as Bono tossed off his hooded.silks, the band ripped into two bookends of their career, opening with the techno-driven "Mofo" from their latest album "Pop" and diving headfirst into "I Will Follow" from their 1980 debut "Boy." Edward OmelasSan Antonio Express-News Bono and 112 played majestically for a crowd of 30,000 at the Alamodome on Sunday.
