Sports Thursday, July 22, 1999 C7 Austin American-Statesman Dream Team's 83 points are fewest yet Lone Stars fall short against Denver as season winds down Pan Am Games gearing up WINNIPEG, Manitoba Five thousand athletes from 42 countries in North, South and Central America and the Caribbean will compete in 41 sports at the Pan American Games, which begin Friday and end Aug. 8. Because 15 sports are Olympic-qualifying events, athletes who do well at the Pan Am Games could move on to the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Qualifying sports include baseball and gymnastics. According to the International Games Preparation Division of the United States Olympic Congress, about 60 percent of the U.S.

delegation will be the top standard, or caliber, athletes. However, 38 of 51 (75 percent) United States teams will be caliber. Cuban pistol shooter defects Cuban pistol shooter Abel Juncosa Reyes defected when his team arrived in Winnipeg for the Pan American Games. Reyes walked into a Royal Canadian Mountain Police station on Tuesday and asked to remain in Canada. He was turned over to federal immigration authorities, then released, pending an immigration hearing.

A source said Reyes remained under police protection after seeking asylum. The Cuban team has been plagued by numerous defections, including five basketball players last week. From wire reports x- SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico The United States men's basketball team hit a new low Wednesday night, managing just 83 points its lowest total of the Dream Team era. The Americans made only two baskets in the final Si minutes of a physical 83-61 victory over Venezuela, eclipsing the previous low of 87 against Angola in the 1996 Olympics. "I think if we really wanted to go out there looking at records, we could have scored more," guard Steve Smith said.

It was the fourth time in seven games in the Tournament of the Americas that the United States failed to reach 100, something that happened only once in the first 22 Dream Team games in 1992, 1994andl996. In an earlier game, a turnover by Steve Nash on the game's final possession allowed Puerto Rico to defeat Canada by the margin it needed, 80-75. Under a complicated tiebreaking formula, Puerto Rico needed to win by at least four points to avoid playing the United States in the semifinals. And everyone in the raucous Roberto Clem-ente Coliseo knew it as Nash brought the ball upcourt with 18 seconds left and Canada trailing by five. Nash, a Dallas Maverick, drove to his right and threw a crosscourt pass that was picked off.

Sherman Hamilton of Canada stole the ball back and got off a By Mark Goodwin American-Statesman Correspondent The Austin Lady Lone Stars faced their toughest competition of the season Wednesday night, the Denver Diamonds of the W-l League, and came up a little short, losing 2-0 at St. Stephen's School. The Diamonds used tough defense, team quickness and excellent ball movement to hand the Lone Stars their third defeat of the season, dropping them to 6-3 with one regular-season game remaining. Despite the loss, Austin has clinched a playoff berth and will face the North Texas Heat in the first round. Lone Stars Coach Jon McCain said he was pleased with his team's play against one of the best women's teams in the country.

"I thought we did very well," McCain said. "Denver is a good team they beat Dallas (North Texas) 3-0 yesterday. If we play like this in Dallas (against the Heat), we've got a good chance to win our first playoff game." Several errant Austin passes and unforced turnovers combined with anticipation from Denver defensive players gave the Diamonds a decided edge in time three-pointer at the buzzer, but it missed. The result set up a likely semifinal rematch between Puerto Rico and Canada on Saturday. The United States will likely play Argentina in the other semifinal.

Two Olympic berths will be at stake. The Americans, playing their seventh game in seven nights, clearly looked tired as they went at half-speed against an overmatched Venezuela team. Gary Payton scored 18 points, including 12 of the United States' first 29, and Tim Hardaway shook off the crowd's catcalls and scored 14. Allan Houston and Tim Duncan added 11 points apiece, and Kevin Garnett had 10. After taking a 78-52 lead on a fast break layup by Hardaway with 5:31 left, the Americans got only two more baskets a jumper by Hardaway with 2:29 left and a driving layup by Wally Szczerbiak with 37 seconds remaining.

Hardaway was booed by the crowd after he clotheslined Venezuela's Yumerving Mijares early in the game. "Somebody had to go out there and set that little guy straight," Hardaway said. "He was going under folks, pushing guys down, getting all physical." In earlier games, Brazil defeated Uruguay 100-74 and Argentina beat the Dominican Republic 85-71. of possession. In the 13th minute, Denver's Wynne Mcintosh blasted a high shot over Austin goalkeeper Sue Ramirez that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the goal, giving the Diamonds a 1-0 lead.

For the rest of the first half, Denver took target practice at the Austin goal, racking up a 17-4 advantage in shots. If not for several impressive saves by Ramirez, playing her first game for the Lone Stars, the damage could have been much worse. With 8 minutes to play in the first half, Denver's Jaime Dierenger passed behind Austin's defense to Orly Ripmaster. Ripmaster had only the goalkeeper to beat and put the ball past a fast-charging Ramirez for a 2-0 lead. The Lone Stars have played North Texas, their first-round playoff opponent, three times this season, winning the first but losing the last two 6-0 and 5-0.

Should the Lone Stars defeat the Heat, they would face the winner of Cleveland-Indiana series. There is a chance that Austin could host a second-round playoff match. Playoff games are played at the home field of the team with the higher winning percentage.
