Page 30 time out review Ending zaps 'Last Embrace' In I mini n'riMi I By PATRICK TAGGART American Statesman Staff "Last Embrace" is just about to succeed as a modestly successful thriller when the ending comes along, throwing the whole thing into the toilet. Actually, into Niagara Falls. Roy Scheider, who has played the sheriff of Amity in a pair of "Jaws" pictures, here essays the role of a government agent rebounding from a nervous collapse. He was pushed over when his wife caught some lead intended for him in, of all places, El Paso.

When he returns home, he finds a strange, lovely young woman in his apartment. In addition, it seems someone is trying to bump him off. Is it his boss (Christopher Walken) who merely wants to dispose of the now usless agent? Is it the author of a threatening note, written in ancient Hebrew? Or is it merely residual paranoia? Janet Margolin plays the strange, lovely young woman, who accompanies Scheider in the quest for his would-be killer. Soon the mystery-thriller takes on issues of race and history, which lend it a little credibility. Murray Teigh Bloom wrote the novel 13th upon which the film was based, and one suspects the story was more enjoyable in black and white.

Director Jonathan Demme never quite succeeds in getting higher than treetop level in building tension, despite' the excellent efforts of Scheider and Margolin.
