But the show's compelling characters and superlative actors held the show together right to the end. The show that replaced "Another World" is "Passions." We have to admit to being prejudiced against this show. Even if we could put aside ill will over its replacing "Another World, we could not put aside our antipathy toward head writer James E. Reilly's work. It was he who brought Satan to Salem on "Days of Our Lives" along with other ridiculous flights of fancy that made the ratings skyrocket, but also dragged the medium down.

So it comes as a pleasant surprise to report that "Passions" has merit. Yes, there are too many vapid teens. Yes, too much of the cast is getting on-the-job training. But the show has enough mysteries to keep viewer interest. What is Whitney's secret? Ivy's? Chad's? Pilar's? You get the picture.

And Reilly's flights of fancy have proved to be the delight of the show. Tabitha and Timmy, a sometime witch and a doll that has come to life, are the show's best coupling. They're daytime's version of Laurel and Hardy. Comedy on daytime often falls flat, but they are laugh out loud funny. So we enter the new year with the hope that "Passions" sustains what "Sunset Beach" lost the ability to make the viewer tune in tomorrow.

By Nancy M. Reichardt United Feature Syndicate NEW YORK Y2K approaches, so if chaos prevails, we are prematurely ringing out the old and welcoming in the new. It is time to bid farewell to "Sunset Beach" and to welcome "Passions." NBC has canceled "Sunset Beach" (the last air date is Dec. 31). The show has been in a steady decline.

The nadir was the artificial insemination by turkey baster of a clueless mother-to-be. Now the show is a study in desperation. It had moderate success with the back-from-the-dead Derek terrorizing the town, taking his brother, Ben, hostage, and then impersonating him. Clive Robertson did a fine job in both roles. The problem is he still does.

Derek is back in a retread story only some of the victims have changed. Even those closest to Ben note behavioral changes, but taking the not-so-giant leap of merely wondering if Derek has returned escapes them all. If the story were more compelling, and not just repetitious, or if the characters were not so black and white, the story might fly. "Sunset Beach" has resurrected the presumed but not actually dead Gregory Richards as his own Uncle Tobias (both played by Sam Behrens). machinations, but did temper viewer indignation toward him.

But, again, the show went too far when he terrorized his own daughter for her own good. Then came Uncle Tobias in a fright wig so bad it distracted from the story at hand. One of the stories that should have packed a wallop was the discovery by Ricardo Torres (Hank Cheyne) that his beloved brother Antonio (Nick Kiri-azis) had violated his sacred vows as a priest and been intimate with Antonio's fiancee, Gabi Martinez (Priscilla Garita). This is a double wallop and played with no true bad guys. The show allowed the bond between the secret lovers to build slowly.

But the discovery of their intimacy and his character's resulting stroke was played so badly by Cheyne that it was laughable. He actually resorted to eye rolling and teeth gnashing. His rehab and revenge have been played the same way, and that has blown the show's most promising story. "Sunset Beach" is a series of missed opportunities, and it is no wonder that even when it has drawn viewers, it has failed to keep them. We recently bemoaned the demise of "Another World," a show that certainly had more than its share of low points, NBC Hank Cheyne's howlingly bad overacting helped kill one of the most promising storylines on 'Sunset': the Ricardo-Gabi-Antonio triangle.
