YetM DAILY OFTIC Friday, SepteMter 25, to the editor School aid questions asked The issue of public aid to private schools has been discussed in the editorial section of the Optic with a bit more heat than light. I should like to offer a few of my personal observations on this subject. (1) There are valid arguments on both sides arguments I shall not here belabor. But we should keep one fact clear in New Mexico, aid to private schools is virtually synonymous with aid to parochial schools, There is no way one can take a political stand on this issue free from religious overtones. In a personal sense there is no way I can write this letter and separate the political scientist from Protestant.

(2) The belief that the United States has'ever had a complete separation of church and state.is, at best, a myth, and, at worst, a useful He perpetrated those who have benefited most from'its implications. Public education in the United'States' h'as always contained a heavy dose of ProtestantT theology. We -tend to forget that the Catholic Church in country first established parochial.schools- as a reaction to the compulsory teaching of Protestant, dogma in'-'oiir school system and as late as middle 19501s I was instructed to accept the complete absence ofjPeter Rome as an "historical" Whatever the present, state of affairs the Catholic Church has understandable grounds for past grievances unjustly rendered. (3) Our government has always supported and promoted the established religious institutions of:" this nation (and vice versa). Now I don't wrong.

We are, and must continue to be an essentially religous nation. What is wrong is our blind'faith in the "separation" myth. Take, for example, church tax exemption. Indiscriminate worrying is bound tb give even the best of brains the bends.

And that is what is happening to a lot of people: They hog worries, large and small. They feel that if they don't crinkle their foreheads' over problem facing mankind; nothing will be done about it. This is egotism. No eye can shed a tear every 'woe oh earth; and no single mind 'can resolve all.the conflicts that face the human race.
