At 35, she likely will die from a cancer health officials say should have been eradicated decades ago. For women across the nation, the pap smear has detected cell abnormalities that can be treated long before they develop into cancer. But mortality rates have held steady in certain regions. Department of Health and Human Services estimated that 50,000 American women would die from breast or cervical cancer in 2001.
