C2 Sunday. May 9. 1999 Sports Austin American-Statesman Veselka's 2 goals lift Lone Stars r'5 vMb bite 1 1 Venus Williams turns back Hingis Venus Williams finally caught up to Martina Hingis on clay, wearing down the world's No. 1 player in three sets Saturday to reach the Italian Open final for the second straight year. Other than a 25-minute mid-match lapse, Williams found just the right mix of power and guile to oust the tournament's top seed and defending champion, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

Williams ended her two-match clay losing streak to Hingis and face fourth-seeded Mary Pierce in today's final at the Foro Italico in Rome. Pierce beat fellow Frenchwoman, Amelie Maures-mo, 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 6-4. Horse racing Real Quiet enjoyed a victorious return to Baltimore's Pimlico, winning the $500,000 Pimlico Special by a neck over Free House. Real Quiet, who had three straight second-place finishes since the 1998 Preakness, covered the 1 3-16 miles in 1:54 1-5. Auto racing Elton Sawyer claimed only his first NASCAR Grand National victory since 1994, winning the Busch Series 200 at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H.

Sawyer, driving the only Ford in the top five, averaged 103.234 mph. Pole-sitter Jeff Green, the first of eighth straight Chevrolet finishers, was second. The Indy Racing League will issue no points or official prize money to the teams and drivers who competed in the race in Con i By Mark Goodwin i American-Statesman Correspondent TheLoneStarsusedtwogoalsbyChrisVeselkaand a great performance by goalkeeper Micah Grossman to win a hard-fought and. acrimonious defensive battle 2-0 over the Houston Hurricanes on Saturday night in a U.S. Open Cup qualifier at Del Valle Stadium.

Veselka scored his first goal with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game to break a scoreless tie, than added another with 2:20 left. "Chris is just a really dangerous offensive player," said Lone Stars Coach John Fizsimons. That might be an understatement. So far this season, Veselka has had a part in every Lone Stars goal, scoring four and assisting on the other four. Fizsimons also credited Grossman with a big part in the victory.

While Grossman had only four saves; every one looked like a potential score. The first half of Saturday night's game had about as many penalties, yellow cards and near-fights as good scoring opportunities. Tempers flared; there were several hard fouls and players had to be restrained from fighting a few times. Things opened up a bit in the second half and both teams got good shots on goal. At least twice, Grossman made diving stops of Houston shots that looked bound for the goal.

But with 20 minutes left in regulation it was still 0-0. Then Veselka found a seam in the Hurricanes' defense and blasted a shot into the net to break the deadlock. The Hurricanes had several chances to tie the game but couldn't capitalize. With 2:20 left in the game, Veselka got a pass from Gabe Jones and put the ball into the net. Fizsimons said his team is capable of playing better.

"Actually, I thought we played better against Minnesota, even though we lost that game (0-1). I'm happy with the result, though. We needed to win these last two games before we go on the road to play Texas (Toros) and Tulsa. We're lacking consistency because of the injuries and position changes we've had to make." By Mark Goodwin American-Statesman Correspondent Saturday night was supposed to be the Austin Lady Lone Stars' initiation into a women's national soccer league. Instead it looked more like the Lone Stars were the ones doing the hazing.

The Lone Stars scored three goals during a 10-minute first-half flurry and dominated the Houston Tornados for a 6-0 victory in the teams' inaugural W-2 League game. Austin's offensive attack was led by midfielders Shannon Presley and Kim Cameron. Presley scored the Lone Stars' first-ever goal with 30 minutes remaining in the first half when she drilled a free kick from about five meters outside of the penalty box low and to the left of Houston goalkeeper Amanda Banar. It was a sign of things to come for Banar, who might have spent more time retrieving the ball from the back of her net than Houston's offense spent on the Lone Stars' side of the field. The Lone Stars outshot Houston 29-2.

Less than three minutes after Presley's first goal, she was back in the action. With 27:35 to play in the first half, she crossed the ball in front of the goal to wide-open midfielder and ex-Texas Longhorn Kim Cameron, who hammered the ball into the back of the net, giving Austin a 2-0 lead. The Lone Stars capped their 10-minute scoring outburst with 20 minutes to play in the first half. Austin defender Jeny Eden bounced a shot off the goalpost that rolled right in front of the goal line to Alyson Miles. Miles angled a shot past a charging Banar into the net, putting the Ha LamFor AA-S Kim Cameron of the Lady Lone Stars, right, winds up for a shot as Angie Rigsby of the Houston Tornados closes in on defense.

The Lone Stars won 6-0. Lone Stars held tryouts in March but have practiced with a full team for only one week. Against Houston, though, the Lone Stars seemed to be in midseason form. Presley said the offensive barrage was no fluke. "We've got five or six players who can score at any given moment," she said.

"We've got some really talented finishers." Lone Stars up 3-0 at halftime. Presley, whose professional soccer experience includes playing men's indoor soccer, said she is encouraged by what she sees from her new teammates. "We've got some real experienced players and we've also got some younger players," Presley said. "I think that's a great blend of talent." That talent has blended quickly.
