Sports Sunday, December 5, 1999 CIS Austin American-Statesman New Braunf els Canyon WPHL standings Stars 3, Senators 1 College Mystery solved: Owens will be a force in debut season By Mark Rosner American-Statesman Staff University of Texas basketball practice is closed to the public, but word filtered out from behind drawn curtains in the Erwin Center last season that Chris Owens, ineligible for games after transferring from Tulane, frequently dominated workouts. Now the 6-foot-8-inch Owens is on display for everyone to see. His coming-out party was Saturday during an 88-81 loss to Arizona in the Erwin Center. Owens, a sophomore forward, had 19 points and 11 rebounds, both career highs. "He's a natural scorer," Texas Coach Rick Barnes said.

"He's getting better and better." Owens caught the eye of at least one NBA scout who was in Austin to watch Texas center Chris Mihm. Owens hit eight of 16 shots, most of them the result of powerful moves inside. His work enabled Texas to take a 31-29 halftime lead despite losing the 7-foot Mihm for all but nine minutes of the half because of foul trouble. Owens weighs about 240 pounds. His strength and agility enable him to grab offensive rebounds he had seven against Arizona and score inside even when surrounded by defenders.

He shoots with either hand. He is what is known as a finisher around the basket. Arizona, like other Texas opponents, dared Owens to shoot from the perimeter while defenders dropped off him to double-team Mihm inside. Owens missed his first few perimeter shots, but in the second half he converted two in a row, one a three-pointer. "Rick has to be pleased about how Chris Owens played," Arizona Coach Lute Olsen said.

"Until tonight, people could play off him. But if he continues to shoot like he did tonight, that will open things up inside." Owens was rated among the top 25 players in the country as a senior at Duncanviiie High. Highly recruited, he signed with Tulane instead of Arizona, among many others. After averaging a modest six points and five rebounds in 20 minutes per game as a freshman, Owens decided to hook up last season with Barnes, then the new coach at Texas. Through five games, Owens is averaging SOUTHWIST NW Oklahoma 21, Maty 6 Nebraska 22.

Mihm is joined on the front line now by Chris Owens. 14.2 points and 6.8 rebounds.

After one season as a part-time player and an other on the sidelines, Owens still considers A himself a novice. "I still have to adjust to the speed (of college ball)," Owens said. They were looking up at the Wildcats because, after doing a decent job of taking care of the ball in the first half, they got sloppy at the outset of the second. And Arizona made them pay. After Mihm's baseline jumper opened the half, the Wildcats went on their 16-2 run over a 3'Vminute span. Two of their buckets came on lazy passes by William Clay and Chris Ogden that were intercepted and converted into breakaway buckets by center Loren Woocls and Gardner. "Our offense got us in trouble," Barnes said.

"Our shot selection was poor and we gave them two easy baskets on turnovers that led to their run. We only had 13 turnovers, but a couple of them were real costly." Owens 3, Clay 2, Kelly. Continued from CI Arizona run, and by eight points with 69 seconds left, actually had a chance to tie the game in the final 10 seconds. Chris McColpin drained a three-pointer on his only shot of the night and Arizona's Luke Walton, son of former NBA great Bill Walton, answered with one of two free throws to give the Cats an 84-81 lead with 9.7 seconds left. But UT backup guard Darren Kelly, who scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, took the inbounds pass and drove all the way to the basket instead of kicking the ball out for a three-pointer. Kelly missed the layup, too, and Arizona hit three free throws after that to clinch the game.

"Darren played so hard. I think he got caught up in it a little," Barnes said. "He got a little excited, but he played his heart out." It was only after Kelly missed the layup that the Wildcats could breathe easy. "He was my man," Jefferson said. "Once he crossed that three-point line, it was like, 'Hey, let him score the That last minute was nerve-wracking.

They hit so many big shots, and we couldn't stop them." The Longhorns didn't do much to stop Jefferson, especially in the second half when he scored all of his team-high 19 points after taking only one shot in the first half because of foul trouble. After Texas chipped away to finally tie the game at 66 on two free throws by Chris Mihm with 3:53 left, Jefferson took over. He drained two three-pointers, sandwiched around a spinner in the key, to help rebuild Arizona's lead to 76-68. Gardner also was hot, hitting four of six three-point attempts (three of three in the second half) to finish with 18 points as all of the Wildcats' starters finished in double figures. "Jason made some great choices in the second half," Arizona Coach Lute Olsen said.
