season, Los Angeles manager Bill Russell was forced to use Martinez (8-5) when he ran out of relievers in the 15th. Martinez, who pitched seven shutout innings on Wednesday against Florida, went four innings in his first relief appearance since Oct. 2,1988. 1 "You hate to play that long and lose," the Dodgers' De-lino DeShields said. "I'm tired, man." Martinez is too, and he's scheduled to make his next start on Tuesday at Pittsburgh.

"I'm tired. I'm very tired," Martinez said with a grin. "I threw in the bullpen yesterday and today I ran. But in a situation like this, you have to be a teammate. If the game was still tied, I might have tried one or two more, innings." The streak of 27 outs-with-out a hit didn't make the difference because the Dodgers couldn't push across a run.

an RBI single. "It was just a shame we didn't wrap it up, after the way Maddux pitched," said Braves Manager Bobby Cox, ejected along with Chipper Jones in the 13th after arguing a called third strike with Bob Davidson. "Who would ever think it would go that far? We were out of everything." The Braves, who complete their 17-game Olympic road trip on Sunday, took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Klesko's RBI single. Los Angeles went ahead 2-1 in the bottom half on Karros' RBI double and Kirby's run-scoring double-play grounder. Fred McGriff hit an RBI double in the sixth and Jer-maine Dye's run-scoring single put Atlanta ahead.

It was his second major-league victory the first he has seen in person. On May 4 of last season, the left-hander had pitched one inning of relief in a suspended game the Braves eventually finished on Sept. 7 at Florida. When Woodall finally got the win, he was with Triple-A Richmond and watched the completion on television. "I've been waiting for this for awhile," Woodall said.

"I wasn't even with the team for my first win last year, so I'm glad to be with the team and shaking guys' hands." It could have been over a lot earlier. Mark Wohlers tied to protect a 3-2 lead for Greg Maddux, who allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. But Raul Mondesi tripled with two outs in the ninth and Wayne and Kirby lined an 0-2 pitch for West wows Phillies Associated Press PHILADELPHIA David West waited an entire year for Saturday, and although the left-hander didn't get a win, he was proud of his performance. West, who had not pitched since last July after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery, pitched five innings as the Philadelphia Phillies, beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6. "I'm very happy to be back and I'm really pleased with the way things went today," said West, who pitched for, the first time since beating the Pirates on July 6 of last season.

West was poised to get the victory when reliever Ricky Bottalico (3-5) gave up a game-tying, two-run homer to pinch-hitter Mark Johnson in the top of the ninth. The Phillies, however, won the game in the bottom of the ninth when Pittsburgh's Jeff King, switched to second base from first for the ninth, misplayed a grounder and allowed the winning run to score. "West threw well," Phillies' Manager Jim Fregosi said. "He had a lot of life on his fastball for the first three innings. He gave us a real good effort." West had made seven minor-league starts before being activated before the game.

"It's been a long time and I know I still have some recovering to do but I'm very confident that I'll make progress," West said. "I know it won't come over night but I'm willing to battle to get things back." C-111 Austin, TX 787S1 Expires 8BM 16Meg 72Pin $104 OT victory advances Omaha to USISL's final 6 By Dan Silvia Special to the American-Statesman OMAHA, Neb. Mike Bustos' rebounded goal nine minutes into overtime Saturday night gave Omaha a 3-2 win and dashed the Austin Lone Stars' hopes for a USISL Premier League divisional soccer tournament title. Bustos' goal came on a short volley after Omaha's Eduardo Rodriguez blasted a shot at Austin goalkeeper Robert Weaver. Weaver stopped the shot but couldn't control the rebound. "Our guys on our team were fantastic.

Everybody played their hearts out," Weaver said. "It's a disappointing loss extremely disappointing. I think we actually could have gone on, but as it turns out we're the ones that are going home. I've just been very happy to play with a group of guys like this this year." The Flames advance to Cocoa Beach, for the United Systems of Independent Soccer League's "Sizzlin Six," the six-team national championship format Aug. 16-18.

"Austin came out very strong," Bustos said. "It took us awhile to get in a rhythm, but when we did we stayed on top of it." Austin scored first when Gabe Jones flashed into the goal box and beat Omaha goalkeeper John Epperson with a low shot to the right post 7 minutes, 58 seconds into the match. Omaha knocked in the tying goal with 7:28 left in the first half. Brian Adams lofted a ball to Johnny Torres, who got just enough of it with the bottom of his foot to push it in. Omaha went ahead early in the second half when Adams got loose in the top left corner of the goal box and hammered in a shot to the near post.

Austin didn't let the Flames enjoy the lead long. Chris Veselka sent in a direct free kick from 25 yards out three minutes later. Both teams entered the over-, time one player down. Omaha lost defender Marc Madeley to a red card with 30 minutes remaining in regulation and Jones, one of Austin's top offensive players, was red carded five minutes later.
