Auchinleck, Treasurer of Antigua, to act as Auditor-General of the Leeward Islands Mr. M. D. B. Eldridge to act as Treasurer of Antigua and Mr.

W. B. Davey to act as Harbour-Master of Antigua. The War Office has notified that on November 1 the 1st Royal Warwickshire will be sent from home to Malta, and the vessel taking out the battalion will subsequently take the 2nd Leinster from Malta to Bermuda, the 1st Royal Berkshire from Bermuda to Nova Scotia, the 1st Royal Liverpool from Nova Scotia to the West Indies, the 1st Leicestershire from the West Indies to the Cape, the 2nd York and Lancaster from the Cape to Mauritius, the 1st Black Watch from Mauritius to India, the 1st North Lancashire from India to Ceylon, and the 2nd Royal Warwickshire from Ceylon home. Dr.

W. H. Edwards, Senior Medical Officer at St. John, Antigua, has sent in his resignation. He took up his appointment in the Leeward Islands in 1853, and is, therefore, not a young man.

He has performed his duties during his long career to the best of his ability, and his retirement is much regretted. Sir Alexander Thomas Cockburn-Campbell, has just been appointed Clerk of Courts at Wyndham, a northern town in Western Australia, where the thermometer never falls below The post is worth 1801. a year, but as Sir Alexander is a young man of good ability it may be hoped that the West Australian Government will manage to find something better for him before long, if only on his late father's account. Sir Alexander is 23 years of age, and succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father three years ago. He is a West Australian, his mother being a daughter of the late Mr.

Arthur Trimmer, of Pootenup. The late Sir Thomas Cockburn- Campbell was for many years President of the Legislative Council of Western Australia and co-editor of the leading paper published in the capital of the Colony. Sir John B. Thurston, Governor of Fiji, is at present staying at Clifton, and enjoying the air of that fashionable retreat in the West of England. The Government of Western Australia has, after full consideration, decided to appoint Sir Malcolm Fraser, K.C.M.G., Agent-General for the Colony in London for a further term of two years.

It was at one time expected that Sir William Robinson would consent to undertake the duties in the event of his retirement from the Governorship. The Commander-in-Chief on the Australian Station arrived at Townsville on August 16, and sailed on August 19 for Keppel Bay. The Rev. A. H.

Champion, head master of the Church of England Grammar School, Launceston has been appointed head master of the King's School, Parramatta (N.S.W.). Mr. A. W. Howitt, the new Audit Commissioner in Victoria, and late Secretary for Mines in that Colony, led the Burke and Wills Relief Party into the interior many years ago, and brought back to civilisation the only survivor of the expedition, King.

He has been 40 years in the public service of the Colony, and is universally esteemed. Mr. Howitt is a son of William and Mary Howitt. Mr. John Mouatt, of Blenheim (N.Z.), has been recommended to the Imperial Government as Chief Inspector of Stock at the Falkland Islands.

The salary is 400L per annum for three years. Colonel Ivor Herbert, O.B., O.M.G., who has vacated the appointment of General Officer Commanding tEje Canadian Militia, has rejoined his regiment for duty, and taken over the duties of Second in Command of the. 3rd. Battalion Grenadier Guards. Lieutenant Herbert W.

Wilberforce, 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays), has been selected for appointment Camp to the Earl of Aberdeen, G.C.M.G., of Canada. Mr. J. R. Esmonde has succeeded Mr.

J. M. Henry, as Deputy Collector of Inland Revenue at Ottawa. Mr. has been superannuated after a service of 28 years.

The Hon. T. H. Cochrane, M.P., has been appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (unpaid) to the Secretary of State for the Colonies. A telegram received from Penang announces the arrival there of the Pique on August 18.

INDIAN SERVICE GOSSIP. BY ANGLO-INDIAN." Colonel D. J. S. M'Leod, D.S.O., Madras Cavalry, Assistant- Adjutant-General, Secunderabad, has been appointed to the command of a second-class district, Madras, with the temporary rank of Brigadier-General, vice Major-General G.

C. Bird, C.B., who has vacated the post. Brigade-Surgeon-Lieutenant-Colonel Franklin, Surgeon to the Viceroy, will officiate, in addition to his own duties, as Inspector-General of Civil Hospitals in the Punjab, vice Surgeon-Colonel Raye, who has gone on three months' leave. Lieutenant-Colonel Collingwood, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, was thrown from his horse while riding at Quetta the other day, and sustained concussion of the brain. He is steadily improving, and his condition now gives no cause for anxiety.

Mr. Sly has gone to Simla from the Central Provinces to take up his work as Under-Secretary in the Revenue Department. Mr. Levinge, who officiated, reverts to his post as Under-Secretary in the Political and Judicial Department, Bengal. Mr.

W.
