AP "i r- SMU running back Jacques Smith is gang tackled, led after a 2-yard gain In the first quarter Saturday. The by UCLA's Phillip Ward (97) and Donnie Edwards (23), 13th-ranked Bruins beat stubborn SMU 17-10. By John Nadel Associated Press PASADENA, Calif. UCLA's next game is against top-ranked Nebraska, and the way Coach Terry Donahue sounded after his team's 17-10 victory over Southern Methodist the Bruins don't have much of a chance. "We're not a great football team, guys," Donahue told reporters Saturday after the 13th-ranked Bruins held off the Mustangs.

"We are lucky to be 2-0. It was hard to explain to our kids that this would not be a walk-through. "We fatigued. SMU did a good job of keeping the ball away from us. They played real hard and didn't turn it over.

We struggled to a win today." Shannon Shah rushed for 158 yards on 24 carries, caught six passes for 52 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter as the Bruins hung on in the late going for the second straight game. In its season opener, UCLA blew most of an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter before beating No. 19 Tennessee 25-23. Shah's 9-yard run with 12:17 left capped a 79-yard, nine-play drive, which came right after SMU tied the game. "I don't think we overlooked them, they were just a tough team," Shah said.

"But we definitely did not think it would be this close. We stopped ourselves on a lot of plays. We're still trying to get our thing together." The Mustangs had first and goal at the UCLA 3-yard line with 1:45 remaining, but two running plays lost a yard each before Donnie Edwards sacked Ramon Flanigan for an 11-yard loss. Edwards was credited with 4Vi of UCLA's eight sacks. After a delay-of-game penalty, Flanigan threw an incomplete pass, and UCLA then ran out the clock.

"Coach said if we wanted to win the national title, we've got to stop them," said UCLA safety Abdul McCullough, who was involved in 12 tackles and had an interception. "We knew their quarterback was a good athlete, so we had to stop him." The Bruins (2-0), favored by more than three touchdowns, blew several scoring chances and had their hands full containing Flanigan, who completed 22-of-34 passes for a career-high 301 yards and his team's only touchdown with one interception. UCLA played without All-America wide receiver J.J. Stokes, who sat out the game because of a bruised left thigh. After Shah's touchdown, UCLA missed a chance to extend its lead when Bjorn Merten missed a 44-yard field goal with 5:26 remaining.

The Mustangs then marched deep into UCLA territory before the Bruins stopped them. "Before the end, the players expected to win, but time ran out on us," SMU Coach Tom Rossley said. "They played hard but they got the loss." Rossley said Flanigan shouldn't have gotten sacked on SMU's next-to-last offensive play. "We made a mistake," Rossley said. "We missed a block in front, and Ramon should have thrown the ball out of the end zone.

It should have been fourth-and-goal from the 5. But that's just experience." The Mustangs (0-2) tied the game 10-10 on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Flanigan to Mick Rossley, son of the SMU coach, with 1:09 remaining in the third quarter. SMU drove 68 yards on 10 plays following an interception of Wayne Cook's pass by Troy Williams.
