ASE Preview Prime Bodies SportsCenter Quack Attack Ewoks Making: Hero HSN fminv NBC's 6 new Triends' are twenty ome time Yet another singles ensemble comedy arrives tonight, but don't expect it to be nearly as funny as Seinfeld or Ellen. Nevertheless, prognosticated are predicting that NBC's Friends (at 7:30 p.m. on KXAN, Channel 36 Cable 4) will be a hit, in part because of its cushy time slot ham-mocked between Mad About You and Seinfeld. But also be Based on last season's TV movie of the same name, CBS's Due South arrives tonight (at 7 on KTBC, Channel 7 Cable The series pilot was unavailable for preview, but if the series can sustain tne sweetness and fun of the movie, this new comedy-adventure will be a welcome addition. Paul Gross stars as Benton Fraser, an upright and uptight Canadian Mountje with an amusingly polite approach to police work.

As established in the movie, he teams up with hard-nosed Chicago cop Ray Vecchio, played by David Marciano, to'solve one case, and the two stay together as a team. Unlike the movie, the series is set on the U.S. side of the border. Vecchio sets out to teach Fraser, whose crisp uniform and pointy hat make him stand out in a crowd, how to survive on Chicago's mean streets. But Fraser, as i I'i y'f cause the cast is appealing and because the writing, some of the time, is funny.

You'll notice the word "some" is used here. The show is about six twentysomething friends who live in New York, either to Diane holloway 3, it; 4. l'? if The SemfeW-esque ensemble cast of Friends includes, from left, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer. gether, across the hall or very nearby. They're always bunching into the same room, usually the apartment of Monica (Courteney Cox), an ambitious woman who works as an assistant chef at an uptown restaurant and has terrible luck with men.

In the pilot, Monica goes on a date with a man who laments that he's become impotent. Feeling sorry for him, Monica helps him prove his "condition" was temporary only to find out the man lied to get her into bed with him. That's the least funny part of the pilot, as you might imagine. Also in the pilot, Monica's rich and pampered high-school chum Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) bursts into the apartment in her wedding dress. She left her husband-to-be at the altar because she suddenly realized he reminded her of Mr.

Potato Head. She also realized she was "more turned on by the gravy boat" on the gift table. Other members of the hip half-dozen include Monica's brother Ross (David Schwimmer), whose wife has walked out on him after revealing that she's a lesbian; Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Monica's ditzy, Madman of the People stars Dabney Coleman as a grumpy columnist who finds his daughter, Cynthia Gibb, suddenly in charge of the magazine he works for. friend, Jack attacks her teddy bear with a knife, gouging out its eyes and stuffing. "I'm a professional eccentric!" Jack yells at his daughter.

"You're a professional gas-bag!" Meg retorts. The best moments of Madman are at home, where Jack enjoys the love and support of his wife Delia (Concetta Tomei), puts up with the arrested development of 24-year-old son Dylan (John Ales) and basks in the near-perfection of older daughter Caroline (Ashley Gardner), whose only flaw is that she married nitwit Kenny (Robert Pierce). The cast is excellent, and Coleman, whose acerbic characters apparently are an acquired taste (none of his shows has lasted more than a season), is as testy as ever. But NBC is counting on Jack's home life to soften his edges enough to keep him on the air. sisted by his trusty wolf Dietenbacher, does just fine on his own.

It's a fish-out-of-water buddy show, but instead of having the fish change, the water does. Crooks and killers just naturally respond to Fraser's helping hand and impeccable manners. Competition is stiff on Thursday evenings, but if CBS senses a potential audience for Due South, it'll probably have a fighting chance at another time slot. In returning series news, Seinfeld opens its sixth season (at 8 tonight on Channel 36) with the major-league baseball strike magically gone. George, who landed a job last season as an executive with the Yankees, preps his team for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Jerry goes on a date withTa Miss America contestant, with Kramer along as an escort, and Elaine applies for a job held by a recently deceased editor. Mad About You (at 7 p.m. on Channel 36) starts, off its third season with the Buchmans taking an end-of-summer car trip. You know about New Yorkers arid cars, don't you? will finally hit the motherlode. That's because a test pattern would become a hit on NBC following Seinfeld.

Madman of the People (at 8:30 tonight on Channel 36) softens the hard edges Coleman so proudly displayed in Buffalo Bill, Slap Maxwell and Drexell's Class; but he's still a far cry from television's typical cuddly. Coleman plays Jack Bruckner, whose column, "Madman of the People," is a mainstay of My Life magazine. The publication has fallen on hard times, however, and the parent company decides to hire the hottest wunderkind in the publishing world. That happens to be Jack's daughter Meg (Cynthia Gibb). After learning that Meg plans to fire or demote his best waif-like college roommate; and across-the-hall neighbors Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Chandler (Matthew Perry), a couple of clumsy lost causes.

Joey is an actor and would-be playboy, while Chandler is adrift professionally and personally. NBC has billed Friends as a "sophisticated comedy," but nobody in the real world would use that description. What's sophisticated about a guy who dreams his penis is a telephone? Still, the show does have its funny moments despite the fact that it portrays twentysomethings as completely goofy and self-absorbed. Madison Avenue types have also predicted that Dabney Coleman's umpteenth portrayal of a grumpy middle-aged man rfiME MOVIES point them to a rocket base.
