TIB "inlinitoD Democrat. W. J. HILLIOASS, IjUlltor. JA.

17. 1878. Why does the Herald oppose tlie 'free coinage of silver? (Juki is coined free. Emiokation to tills country during the past year, yii3 54,530, a decrease of 10,729, as compared with the previous year. The anniversary of the battle of Xew Orleiins was duly celebrated in that city, on the 8th inst.

Tun women suffragists are at Washington in force, and we may expect to hear from them on every occasion during the present session of Congress. I i ilLAiNE, Coukliug and DeLong have united their attacks on President Hayes. "What a blessed satisfaction it is to know that we have done all we could, even 4f it does amount to nothing. i i Ik it be true that Conkling, JJutlcr, "lilaine, Chandler Co. have deterT mined to render the fraudulent occupancy of the White House uncomfortable for Mr.

Hayes, is it wise or prudent for democrats to throw themselves into the breach in order to pro- tcct tho de facto President. The Banner holds to the contrary view. Let these gentlemen right their battles among themselves. Kilkenny fights always furnish more or less amusement to disinterested spectators. National Banner.

These are our sentiments exactly "Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad." The democratic party has no stock in the fight, and hundreds of republicans are disgusted with their party. We are in receipt of two circulars, from Warsaw, Indiana, styled "The Exponent." We presume that they are to be considered as an attack upon (Jen. lleub Williams, editor of the Northern Imlianian. As to their authorship we have no means of knowing, as they are silent. Whoever ho may be, lie makes a mistake and assumes the roll of a coward in not giving his name.

Wo say emphatically that we have no sympathy with anonymous circulars or newspaper articles where their is an effort to injure otliers, when the' author has not the manliness to give his name. Such a course always minds the assassin or the blackmailer, who would destroy you or your character, and even blast the good name of innocence andyirtue, from an iinknown source. No, no, Mr. "Exponent," whatever merits there may be in your complaint, we assure you that we havo no sympathy to extend such anonymous assaults. When you make a contract stand it.

It is dishonest to seek to avoid a contract when once made. Moneyed inen took the bonds of therovern-nient and agreed to take coin. They now seek to avoid that contract. The people want the contract carried out to the letter, They intend that it shall be. The legislation of party leaders destroyed the contract and said, we will not compel the bondholder to take coin, gold and silver, but will give him only gold.

Will we stand it? the and the Herald say yes. The people say no, and they arc in earnest. When they talk us they mean what they say. Now is the time for honest men to make up their minds and stand by the remonetizing of silver. It i3 all moon-shine to talk about making "ninety-two cents a dollar." The man is a knave who woidd thus insult the intelligence of the people.

Even if silver should be worth only 02 cents, the icople say let them take what the contract calls for, nothing more and nothing less. We want no more violation of the law, and it is dishonest to give a measure of gold where the contract was for either gold or silver. The people should be wide awake and be prepared to teach these Shylocks that we are for free coinage and legal tenders. Stand by the contract, is the motto of ever honest man. The Democrat of last week has a notice from the Clerk requesting certain parties to be present at the circuit court "to be holdeu on the 5th Monday of December, 1S77." The advertisement was dated December 20th, 1877.

Of course that kind of a publication is legal, and will be duly sworn to by the brainless creature who pretends to control the Democratic organ. Hera Id, Jan, 9th. Xeed I say to the man who thus seeks to do injustice, that the law fixes the time of holding the court, and not the notice? Need I say to the man Mho talks barn burning as a retribution, that where publication is not made thirty days before the last day of service that the case is continued by operation of law Need I tell, a libel on humanity, that jwe are not sworn to the legality of the publication, but only to the number of times and dates published? Need I say, that if it be perjury to swear to the publication referred to in the above, that the man who never re-, sented the charge of robbing the mails, has also committed perjury Need I say, that the man who would openly and with higb hand, violate wis anoiu uuij us postmaster, is enough to charge others with pei 'jury, also. Such efforts as are encouched in the above item will fail of it3 purpose and we advise the poor miserable fellow to continue his ar against us as postmaster by re-f lns to hand out the Demociiat to -ribcrs, where he. is having bottei i than through his paper.
