Dear Sir, We arrived here last Tuesday morning, and were met at the station by the representatives of the Southern Pacific Railroad the Vicar, and others, and conveyed to the Arlington" and the same afternoon were driven round to get a general idea of the neighbourhood and of Rosedale. The next day, accompanied by Dr.

Bird, we minutely inspected section 23, digging holes to the dep'th of two to three feet. The soil is of a rich light quality, covered with wild flowers and brush (which appears easily removed), and the irrigating works f-or the section are in a forward state. Everyone we discuss the questions with here expresses an opinion that Rosedale is likely to prove an excellent Raisin producing locality, equal (if not superior) to Fresno. The situation is open, and the climate, since we have been here, clear, dry, and beautiful, with refreshing breezes from the N.W. In section 23 I have selected the second and third plots from the S.E.

corner, facing the road from Bakersfield Mr. Andrews the fourth, and Mr. Burnett (I believe for himself and those for whom he acts) the next one-fourth section. We were somewhat disappointed at first, not being able to locate on section 23 near the town, which we were led to expect through your representation, and which by some means you appear to have mistaken for section 23 at Rosedale on examination however, we found the former not so desirable a situation to reside in as the latter. Advice and every facility has been afforded us by the Southern Pacific representatives, and those interested in the land, to enable us to arrive at a decision, and with apparently every desire that we should be fully satisfied before deciding on a situation, and that if we could not be that the Company would not think of detaining our deposit-money.

Knewing, 337, Strand, London. Bakersfield, Cal, March 14th, 1890. Mr. Knewing, Dear Sir, I know you will be anxious to hear our opinion of the Rosedale Colony, and of our reception here. Well, we got here safely last Tuesday morning, and were met at the station by the representatives of the Southern Pacific and Messrs.

McAfee, Brower and Rev. Mr. Clapham, and Dr. Bird representing Mr. Ferguson.

But I must first tell you, and thank the Southern fie through you, for their endeavours to make our journey across the Continent as conn fortable and pleasant as possible. The car was sent direct to New York so that there was no change from New York to Bakersfield. We had a most courteous conductor who met us at cinatti, Mr. Henior, who did all he could to make us comfortable. We were driven out to see section 23, and were rather disappointed when we found that it wag seven miles away instead of being within a mile and a half or so off Bakersfield.

But on examining the soil and the beautiful situation, I think we have rather gained than otherwise in the change of site. The soil I think is admirably adapted for fruit growing, either'grapes or peaches. The position is beautiful, in the centre of a vast plain, encircled with lofty mountains. The water supply seems Abundant and certain. So far we are delighted with the climate, and we seem to have every chance of making a beautiful home here, and also a very comfortable living.

The representatives of the Southern Pacific and Messrs. McAfee and Brower and Rev. Mr. Clapham and Dr. Bird have been most kind in doing everything in their power to make us feel at home, and taking every pains to select a site to our minds, With kind regards, I remain, dear Sir, Yours truly, JOHN BURNETT.
