Led by Sylvester Stallone's Alpine actioner Cliffhanger, the summer film season's traditional kickoff holiday was the second best in at least a decade.

Movies making more than $500,000 accumulated nearly $88.3 million, which was topped only by 1992's Memorial Day weekend take of $93.4 million. Considering there were no high-profile sequel open-ings to fuel this year's filmgoing frenzy, the good business is even more remarkable. Speaking of sequels, Cliffhanger had the best Memorial Day opening of a nonseries film. It's the lOth-highest-grossing picture in the holiday's history; all nine that made more, including last year's second weekend run of Lethal Weapon 3 and premiere of were sequels to previous hits. "It certainly indicates that if you give people movies they want another $8.9 million, the populist presidential fantasy has earned more than $40 million, making it by far the front-ninning favorite of pre-summer season releases.

Another new film, the glorified Nintendo game Super Mario Bros. debuted a disappointing fourth with $8.5 millioa Considering the supposedly vast video game audience and the rumored $50 million the critically flushed adventure cost, this tale of plucky plumber heroes could be the second high-priced failure of the early summer season. The first, of course, being Sliver, the heat-resistant, Sharon Stone sex thriller. Premiering in first place a week earlier, the high-rise hc-hummer plunged to sixth over the holiday weekend. That's behind another sophomore entry, the spoofy Hot Shots! Part Deux.

Seventh place belonged to another new entry, the urban crime drama Menace II Society. Although the Watts-set film's four-day gross of $3.8 million was nearly half that of next up Sliver's, it was playing in less than a fourth as many theaters. Insida Lino's Entertsinmsnt GuisSa nice to see, they tend to go in large numbers," said William Soady, president of distribution for Cliffhanger' studio, TriStar Pictures. Cliffhanger knocked Stallone's own Rambo III out of the historical 10th spot with a four-day gross of slightly more than $20.4 million. The movie's performance reestablishes Stallone as the holiday's king it's the actor's fifth film to make the all-time Memori-al Day top 15 and as a viable action star.

But comedy made a strong showing in the holiday's second and third box-office slots. Another newcomer, the Whoopi Goldberg-Ted Danson starrer, Made in America, finished second with $11.8 million not too far off the opening pace of Goldberg's '92 summer smash, Sister Act. The 4-week-old political farce, Dave, did even better than it did a week earlier.
