(AP) Brook Berringer silenced his doubters and Nebraska's defense silenced Colorado. The result was a loud Comhuskers' claim that they deserve to be No.

1. Berringer, thrust into the spotlight after starter Tommie Frazier was sidelined for the season, directed the offense with precision and the Comhuskers shut down Colorado's high-powered attack Saturday for a 24-7 victory in their Big Eight showdown. -at 1 7 Li secutive time dating back to 1962. The win also snapped the Comhuskers' 12-game losing streak against top 5 teams since 1987. Berringer completed 12 of 17 passes for 142 yards and smoothly guided Nebraska's option attack, which had lost its punch after Frazier was lost for the season with a blood clot in his leg after the Huskers' fourth game.

No. 23 Kansas St. 37, Oklahoma 20 NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma had plenty of early chances against No. 23 Kansas State.

Five Sooner drives started in Kansas State territory in the first half, and the Wildcat offense was struggling. But Oklahoma did not take advantage, and Chad May made the Sooners' pay. He threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to break the game open and the Wildcats went on to a victory. May only threw for 115 yards, the fewest of his two-year career at KSU, but it didn't matter. Oklahoma turned the ball over five times and got outplayed in all phases as it fell to its worst eight-game record in 30 seasons.

The Wildcats (5-2, 2-2 Big Eight) scored more points than they had in 39 previous trips to Norman, and now own consecutive victories over Oklahoma for the first time since 1969-70. Kansas 24, Oklahoma State 14 LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) L.T. The win over the second-ranked Buffaloes (7-1, 3-1) gave the No. 3 Comhuskers (9-0, 4-0) the inside track to the Big Eight championship and Orange Bowl berth, and could vault them over No.

1 Perm State when the polls are released Sunday. "In my mind, I think we're the No. 1 team in the country," linebacker Ed Stewart said. "We played a great team today and beat them soundly." Penn State, meanwhile, did all it could to hold onto its top spot, trouncing No. 21 Ohio State 63-14.

"I don't want to get into that controversy," Nebraska coach Tom Osborne said about the rankings. "We'll let the pundits figure that out." Colorado coach Bill McCartney, whose team has beaten five ranked opponents this season, gave Nebraska his endorsement. "Nebraska is the best team we've played to date and I don't see any reason they shouldn't be No. 1," he said. "They dominated from the onset in all Nebraska running back Clinton Childs (26) leaps for a touchdown in the Knutson (36) and Jeff Blackmon (84) give chase in Lincoln Saturday.

Nebraska, built a 24-0 lead on Berringer's 30-yard touchdown pass to tight end Eric Alford with 10:42 left in the third quarter. "I think we proved we're No. 1 and I think we're going to continue to prove it all season," said Berringer, who played at full strength for the first time since suffering a partially collapsed lung against Wyoming on Oct.

Colorado, shut out in the first half for the first time since 1992, finally scored on Rashaan Salaam's 6-yard run with 1:06 remaining in the third period. But the Buffaloes, who were averaging 40 points per game, continued to struggle against a swarming defense that had given up only 16 points in its previous three games. Colorado was 0-for-ll on third-down tries and 0-for-4 on fourth down. Nebraska won its 22nd straight game at Memorial Stadium, which was sold out for a record 200th con career-high 108 yards in leading Illinois State to a win over Southern Illinois. Hill, a junior, scored from the 5 and 1 to give the Redbirds (5-4 overall, 3-2 Gateway Conference) a 21-7 halftime advantage.

The Salukis (1-7 overall, 0-3 Gateway) got their lone first-half score on a 7-yard pass from David Pierson to Damon Jones. SW Missouri St. 22, Central St. (Ohio) 14 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Lewis made 17 tackles, broke up four passes and intercepted one to help Miami's defense dominate.

For sixth-ranked Miami (6-1), the win set up a Big East Conference showdown next Saturday at No. 14 Syracuse. The Hurricanes have won their three Big East games by a combined 86-12, and the defense has yet to give up a touchdown in the league. No. 7 Texas 21, Southern Methodist 21 SAN ANTONIO (AP) Kyle Bryant missed a 67-yard field goal attempt with 1 second to play and No.

7 Texas had its 26-game Southwest Conference winning streak snapped by a tie with SMU. Bryant's desperation kick attempt came just 27 seconds after SMU's Ben Crosland missed a 43-yard field goal attempt. Florida State (6-1, 6-0 ACQ rolled up 434 yards and 22 first downs in building a 38-6 halftime lead, holding Duke (7-1, 4-1) to 45 yards and four first downs before the break. AUBURN, Ala.

(AP) Stephen Davis rushed for a career-high 246 yards and scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to help No. 4 Auburn overcome a post-Florida hangover and beat Arkansas 31-14 on Saturday, the Tigers' 19th consecutive victory. Auburn (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) trailed 14-10 entering the fourth quarter, the 11th time the Tigers have fallen behind while compiling the nation's longest winning streak. Then Davis took over, doing his best Bo Jackson imitation and perhaps vaulting himself into Heisman Trophy contention in a season lacking in standout candidates. Davis, whose previous career best was 158 yards in the season opener, has gone over 100 yards in three straight games and five times overall.

No. 5 Florida 52, Georgia 14 GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Fifth-ranked Florida, driven by an opportunistic defense that scored three touchdowns, rebounded from its first loss of the season with a rout of Georgia. The defense, criticized for giving up the winning touchdown in the final minute of a loss to Auburn that cost the Gators the No. 1 ranking two weeks ago, redeemed itself by scoring twice on interception returns and also running back a fumble for a TD.

No. 6 Miami 24, No. 13 Virginia Tech 3 MIAMI (AP) Led by middle linebacker Ray Lewis, the Hurricanes downs and 96 yards Saturday as Southwest Missouri State beat Central State, Ohio, 22-14 for the Marauders first loss of the season. Central State (7-1) is the top-ranked team in NAIA Div. I.

The Bears, an NCAA Div. I-AA team, improve to 2-6 with their second straight victory. Wiggins ran for a 13-yard, first quarter touchdown and the Bears held on to a 7-0 lead through halftime.
