By PATRICK TAGGART American-Statesman Staff If you liked Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets (1973) be prepared to have some good feelings about Stuart Rosenberg's The Pope of Greenwich Village. The new film is almost a remake of the first, with a new pair of electric performers and an epic, more expensive look and feel. Scorsese's film, released in 1973 and boasting one of the great, early performances by Robert De Niro, was an almost operatic movie about hustlers in New York's Little Italy.

Scorcese's narrative moved quickly, but not so fast as to deprive any of the principal players time for extended sequences of virtuoso acting. Pope's director, Stuart Rosenberg, took a lesson from Scorsese and allows his two brilliant -lead players, Eric Roberts and Mickey Rourke, to have more than a few arias of their own. It's a longer movie and is populated with more figures (all of whom are richly detailed). It is less Scholarship aid available self-consciously stylish than Scorsese's, but it is every bit as much a gripping, funny-sad entertainment. Not since De Niro and Harvey Keitel chewed up the neighborhood scenery in Scorsese's-film, in fact, have two young actors illuminated the screen with such combustive acting.

The issues, once again, are family loyalties and borderline thuggery. And once again, a basically upright young man, Charlie (Rourke) is shackled with the care of an irresponsible cousin, Paulie (Roberts) a bum who borrows money to dress lavishly with no intention of paying it back. Like the unwitting accomplice who sustains an alcoholic's habit by providing life support, Charlie feeds Paulie's neurosis by bailing him out even when it costs him personally.
