LOUIS Wl — A 10-year research project singles out fluctuating blood pressure from emotional tension as the chief cause of hardening of the arteries, which causes more deaths in the United States than any other disease. I The conclusion, which differs j from that of most authorities, was j reported by Dr. Herman T. Blumenthal, director of the Jewish Hospital laboratory and a member of the research .team here. Most doctors believe hardening of the arteries results from a fatty substance, known as cholesterol, in the blood vessels. Research elsewhere has produced evidence to support this belief. "This is not true," Dr. Blumenthal said in an interview. "It is the ] extent of the pressure of the blood I against the walls of the arteries' that causes them to harden." He said the emotional strain under which Americans live mokes them susceptible to the disease. Stamps Useless SALEM, Ore. W) — The Oregon Tax Commission .after waiting 15 years, finally has given up hope of ever using 11 million cigarette tax stamps. The stamps, purchased in 1941 for a cigarette tax that was-voted down the next year, will be burned at a special ceremony at 1 the state incinerator next Tuesday.
