Mr. Young's Resignation. The followiDg is the letter ot Mr. Young, resigning the office of Town Superintendent of Common Schools. The zealous spirit and the fidelity with which he discharged the duties of tbat office, and the success which attended his efforts, are appreciated by his fellow-citizens, and have been recognized in the most convincing way by repeate i elections to the position To the Selectmen of Burlington, Vt.

My Dear Sirs I have delayed already too long to yield into your hands the office which I bold, of Town Superintendent of Common Schools, and to ask you to excuse me from lurther service by appointing my successor. I hoped to have discharged the duties of the office until the close of the present municipal year, but circumstances connected with an intended removal from town will not allow me to do so. Permit me, through you and the public press, heartily to thank my fellow citizens for their expressions of respect and confidence, annually renewed to me for nine years, by making me their choice for an office so worthy and responsible as that of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Their approbation was I asked in other ways my services have been wholly unselfish and gratuitous. For let me say, that I am not aware that the office has of any pecuniary advantage to me to the amount of a mill.

Every dollar I have received of compensation, which the law allows not to exceed twice number of school districts, has been spent for the benefit of the schools and other dollars besides. All I have done has been freely given. You will allow me to remind you of the great importance of immediately filling the office made vacant by the reception of this note. With a lively interest in whatever pertains to the common schools of Burlington, which many pleasant memories will long keep awake, and again thanking a generous public for their kindly appreciation of my very imperfect services, I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Very respectfully, Your obedient servant, Joshua Young. Cambridge, Nov.

Death. Lieut. Howard, from Randolph, of the Nortbfield company, 12th regiment, died in hospital, on Friday, tbe 21st inst. Razeed. The Franklin County Herald has contracted itself in size, by one column on each page, to counteract the expansion in the price of paper.

Assistant Surgeons. Dr. A. T. Woodward, and Dr.

L. D. Harlow, of this state, have been appointed Assistant Surgeons of Volunteers in the War Department. Drowned. James Kitts, a laborer, fell from the dock near the planing mill Monday night about 8 o'clock and was drowned.

He had been at work on a boat whose position had been changed, without his knowledge, and it i conjectured that he supposed he was about to step upon the boat when he was precipi tated into the lake. The Seized Muskets. The Troy Times sajs tbe muskets, which were seized here and elsewhere recently directed.to Quebeo, were regularly passed by the New York Custom House. Instructions have now been received by the different railroad companies, to forward the muskets to the frontier. They will be retained in the Custom House at Rousis Point, until an adjudication takes place.

Death of an Editor. Mr. David Kinnear, for many years the senior editor and proprietor of the Montreal Herald, died on Friday, Nov. 21, after a long illness, from dysentery. He was born in Edinburgh in 1807.

He was the son of Mr. Kinnear, the celebrated Scottish banker, and studied for the Scottish Bar, to which he was admitted as a member, but he never followed the profession. He was a man of great information and an able writer. His earlier political opinions were conservative, but latterly have been liberal. The Herald has been decidedly inclined to favor the national cause since the opening of our civil war.
