Due to the chain broadcasts of these programs, they have a very large audience, and the designers of the entertainment know their business. Just the rne, Judging from the hits" of 1928 as given last night, it cannot be said that 1928 can be proud of its achievements in this fieldtaking it for granted that the selections given furnish a true cross section of the year's shows. Arrangements for orchestra are all right musically and otherwise, but the songs are terribly weak and the words are Inexcusably trivial and inconsequential. (Picture on back page.) Dec. to the navy's battleship modernization plans developed in the senate today when an attempt was made to obtain approval of a measure authorizing the elevation of the turret guns on the Pennsylvania and Arizona. As a result the program to bring this country's old capital ships up to date may be delayed another year. The alterations contemplated for the Pennsylvania and Arizona, the oldest of the oil burning battleships, include the placing of additional armor protection On the decks, reboilering, elevation of the turret guns, modernization of the fire control Eyfftem, and the installation of blisters and an up-to-date 5 inch anti-aircraft battery. In asking that the bill be acted on immediately by the senate Senator Frederick Hale chairman of the naval affairs committee, said the majority of the eighteen battleships in the United States navy are outramted by British battleships.

Immediate action on the bill was blocked by Senator William 11. King Utah. I think this bill should be passed over until the pending cruiser bill comes up for action," said the Utah senator. "I am very much opposed to the reactionary policy of some persons who are connected with the navy and I would like to have the whole Question threshed out at one FRANK BARDEN, ten or, will be heard on the 10:25 program tonight. Barden is one of the foremost tenors on the air, as is shown by his enormous following.

Assisting the tenor are Jean Goldkette and his W-G-N Dance Orchestra and the W-G-N Concert Orchestra. Though so different in character both of these are recognized as the best of radio musical organizations. --0-- The Technical school chorus, in their program from WLS, 9,30 to 10. were altogether admirable in their youthful. exuberant way.

That they were well drilled was evident from their unaccompanied singing of madrigal types of music. Martin's "Gavotte," played by an instrumental trio violin, cello, and piano, provided real fun for the listener this piece being extremely charming and the amateur trio's slips adding to the fasciruition of the whole thing. Wehad an interesting recital by Joseph Ilobrovich, tenor first time on the air, arid Olda Jirousek, cellist, from W-G-11. 9:30 to 10. Mr.

Bobrovich's voice tone is so melancholy and forlorn that it weighs one down. lie Is a well trained and experienced singer, no question about that, La he adds something decidedly different in radio.
