Business obtained by the new streamlined and high speed passenger trains placed in operation in the last few years have brought revenues to the railroads which apparently they would not otherwise have received and has not cut into the revenues of their existing trains, passenger officials of Chicago railroads said yesterday. The Alton railroad reports that its streamlined train, the Abraham Lincoln, has been a moneymaker ever since it has been in operation. But also important is the fact that since this de luxe train has been in operation between Chicago and St. Louis the road's other trains have shown increases in earnings.

Business on all our trains has increased and the volume we handle on our night trains is much improved over what it was before the Abraham Lincoln went into service." The North Western's "400," the first of the high speed trains to go into service, has been profitable ever since it went into operation between Chicago and St. Paul-Minneapolis, said R.

Thomson, trafic manager. Sufficient new business, has been created for the road's other trains serving the two centers to make diversion of passengers from the other trains to the "400" unnoticeable, he added. Chicago-Denver Travel Increase. Despite the placing into daily service of the high speed streamliner, the City of Denver, the other regular trains serving Chicago and Denver have had an increase of business of about 45 per cent during the time the new trains have been running, Thomson said. The Burlington has found that since its streamlined Zephyr trains have been operating between Chicago and Denver, the business of other trains has picked up.

The Zephyrs have been carrying capacity loads, but despite this the night trains have obtained sufficient business to make them profitable. This road has found that its twice a day Zephyr service to the Twin Cities has cut into the business of the Black Hawk, a standard train, but the increased revenues produced by the Twin Zephyrs offset this. Roads Regaining Trafic. Burlington officials believe that introduction of the new trains has been a vital factor in bringing passengers back to the railroads from other mediums of transportation. This, offi-.

lals say, is demonstrated by experience with the Zephyr operating between Omaha and Kansas City. When the Zephyr went into service on this run, the business on the standard trains was increased. The business handled by the Zephyr train trebled that of the old type train it displaced. The Illinois Central reports that its new streamliner, the Green Diamond, has helped the business of its other trains running between Chicago and St. Louis.

One official admitted that introduction of this fast train made a considerable part of the public conscious of the fact that the Illinois Central goes to St- Louis. Business of the road's night train to St. Louis has been helped, it was said. Since May 17 the Green Diamond has carried 25,000 passengers and the other St. Louis trains have carried about 30,000 passengers in the same period.

Fast, Train Stimulates Travel. The Milwaukee road reports that its Hiawatha train has been a stimulant to travel on that line. 70 Do pfd 3.5 ness on the road's night trains between Chicago and the Twin Cities is reported to be running 30 per cent over a year ago. Both the Pioneer Limited and 1he Olympian are reported to be showing substantial increases in revenue. The New York Central says that the Mercury, high speed train recently put into service between Cleveland and Detroit, has not decreased travel between the two cities on the road's other trains. That road bflievcs the fast schedule of the Mercury has attracted business to the road which might have gone by some other means of transportation. The consensus is that, while improved business has played an important part in increased railroad passenger revenues, the new high speed trains have dramatized the railroads in the minds of the public and made it raiiroad conscious.
