The incomplete returns showed H. A. Doolittle, the father of the present sheriff, running second with a vote of 6,145. Edward A. Brown, county supervisor. followed with 5,867, Elmer Green fourth with 5,126, and Edward Ahlstrom was fifth with a vote of 3,901. Green is the former sheriff of Lake county eand served as the warden of Joliet penitentiary under Gov. Small. The Tiffany forces at Waukegan announced they expected their candidate to poll 10,000 with the tabulation of the complete returns. It was said this would be the largest vote ever accorded a candidate for sheriff in Lake county. For county Judge of Lake county Perry L. Persons was leading Charles Jacks of Waukegan and a nip and tuck battle in the vote returns was being waged between T. A. Simpson and W. C. Petty for the office of county superintendent of schools, a position held by Simpson for the last 24 years. The incomplete returns showed Petty leading. with a vote of 11,690, as against the vote of 10,305 east for Simpson. I WOMEN ADVANCE POLITICALLY BY SENATORIAL WIN Gain in Prestige Through McCormick Victory. BY KATHLEEN McLAUGHLIN. With Ruth Hanna McCormick. Republican candidate for senator from Illinois, successfully over the primary barrier and running far ahead of the field, the feminine candidates In yes- 1 1:erday's competition at the polls last night discovered that what they had lost in numbers they had made up IT) political prestige. Interest in the senatorial contest delayed returns on other state and county nominations until, a late hour, but it appeared certain at midnight that a representative group of women had survived to run again in November. From the feminine point of view the chief defeat of the primary was the failure of Mrs. Lottie Holman O'Neill of Downers Grove to garner sufficient support to defeat her ore ponent on the G. O. P. state senatorship ballot, Richard Barr of Joliet. Mr. O'Neill, a veteran of four terms In the lower house at Springfield, startled the electorate a year ago when she broke with Mrs. McCormick . referring to the latter as a " dictator?' Mrs. O'Neill is prominently allied e.-ith legislation for women. Barr Is the present senator from their district, the 4Ist. Other Race in Doubt. Only one other Republican woman, Mrs. Ida B. WellBarnett, widely known for her club Ictivities . aspired to the post of state senator. Her opponent was a man of her own colored race, Adelbert H. Roberts. Incomplete returns left the issue in doubt at midnight. Only vague indications were available, also, on four well known women candidate-s, each of whom has served one or more terms in the house Of representatives at Springfield. and asked renomination. They are Mrs. Anna Wilmarth Ickes of Winnetka and Mrs. Rena Elrod of Chicago, on the Republican ticket. and Mrs. Saran Bond Hanley of Monmouth and Mrs. Mary Mc Cowan Adams of Quincy, Democrats. -IIC Other Rare in Doubt. They are Mrs. Anna Wilmarth Ickes of Winnetka and Mrs. Rena Elrod of Chicago, on the Republican ticket. and Mrs. Saran Bond Hanley of Monmouth and Mrs. Mary Mc Cowan Adams of Quincy, Democrats. Party Lines Drawn. Party lines were sharply drawn between the Democrats and the G. O. P. women candidates for county beard posts. While all three of the Dem cratic feminine office seekers appeared certain of nomination at midnight, apparently none of the four Republican aspirants had made the grade. Mrs. Glenn E. Plumb, Miss Amelia Sears. and Miss Mary McEnerney were the trio whose prospects looked rosy. Mrs. Emma Martini, who campaigned on the Republican ticket for president of the county board, was left far behind early in the counting, when Otto F. Reich seemed slated to oppose the Democratic incumbent, Anton J. Cermak, in the fall election. Mrs. Judith W. Loewenthal, Mrs. Helen G. Mehrle. and Mrs. Donald Graham, all well known in women's activities. were the Republican can'didatee for county commissioners in the city who appeared to have lost out to the male element For the Democratic nomination for 'county commissioner in the country towns Mrs. E. J. Fleming appeared nominated by the Democrats, but Mrs. Gertrude Leiber, seeking a place -on the Republican commissioners' ballot in the country, was defeated. Mrs. Fleming was third in the list of five to be nominated when returns had been received from 190 precincts out of 455 In the, country towns.
