Titre "Serenade," a duet for flute and French horn, was also repeated. I learn from Henry Selinger of W--(1-N that Titi was for seven years the chief horn player of the Chicago Symphony orchestra. and that be was one of the finest French horn players who ever came to this country. Over the air it was stated that this is the only one of hisi compositions which has become popular. It is a wonder in its plaintive beauty.

ilimsky-Korsakow's "Flight of the Ilurnb le Ilee" was also played This was included by the Chicago Symphony orchestra in last Sunday's W. G-N 6 o'clock concert, and It was one of the most effective numbers on both programs. The title might well be 'The Flight of the Violinists' Fingers," for it3 terrific speed requires nimble fingers on the part of the musicians. BELGIUM SWEPT BY NEW FLOODS; 5 TOWNS UNDER I Federal Judge James IL Wilkerson I will decide on Monday whether he 3ha11 act on evidence that officials of Ithe Checker Taxi company have practiced graft in connection with the purchase of cabs. This was the judge's reply yesterday to a petition of counsel for the Checker Cab Manufacturing company of New Jersey that he start such an inquiry.

Meanwhile the court directed Master In Chancery Thomas J. Peden to continue taking testimony in the COO breach of contract suit filed by the manufacturing concern against the cab company. The name of Robert McLaughlin, president of the cab company, was brought into the evidence concerning the alleged graft. Assistant United States District Attorney Allan Healy told the court that the federal grand jury will be asked to investigate reports that the Checker company has defrauded the government by making false income tax returns. Dec. augmented by inrushing tidewater and pushed along by a violent gale, swept over a section of the lowlands above Terrnonde today, Inundating five villapPs with 10,000 Inhabitants, and tonight threatened destruction greater than that of four weeks ago. The work, of troops and the Red Cross to prevent recurrence of the floods of that time was washed completely away by the torrents today, and nearly 7,000 acres were inundated. The plight of the people in the threatened districts is all the sadder as the official forecast is for a high apring tide Saturday morning. Much suffering and damage alre-ady have resulted.

Maximilian Vigueras, notorious ban-1 dit leader, and three of his officers were captured today by federal troops near Ayotzingo, state of Puebla. VIgueras became notorious two years ago when he kidnaped Jacob Rosenthal, rich Brooklyn manufacturer and banker, while he was here on a visit 1 tb his daughter, Mrs. Jack Zahler. Vigueras asked 820,000 ransom for Mr. Rosenthal, but instead of paying the money, the daughter's husband notified the government and federal troops were sent after Vigueras, who in revenge killed Mr.

Rosenthal. Vigueras has held up numerous par- I ties traveling in the district of Chalc and on the roads between Mexico City! and Cuernavaca and Mexico City and Puebla. With Vigueras were captured Francisco Castro, Antonio Rojas, and Juan Randera, who formed part of the band which captured Mr. Rosenthal. All four were turned over to the war department for court in accordance with the recent instructions of President Portes Gil forbidding I summary executions.

'York. Dec. ih-e Commissioner Grover A. 'Whalen 11 today reopened the investigation into the murder of Arnold Rothstein, the gamSier. 1 Having rounded up some two bun-.

dred known criminals and heis planning a campaign against the liroadway racketeers and the well dressed operatives of the underworld. It was these men who induced the murder of Rothstein. then covered it up completely. They operate on the fringes of the law and seldom are they clumsy enough to let the law get near them. Mr.

'Whalen discussed the Broadway gentry today with District Attorney lianton and asked how far be could legally go in "ridding the city of crooks and racketeers." The prosecutor recommended the revival of a section of the vagrancy law used during the war to make men work Or tight." under which suspects may be brought into court and made to prove that they have a livelihood. The vagrancy law, as such, could not Ifterally be used against the dapper fellows who adorn the ridewalks and after-night rendezvous of Times and Longacre squares, for although they have no regular positions they aro never lacking for money. But the revival of the Wartime section would enable the police to arrest them in droves, hale them before magistrate, and make them tell all about themselves and their rackets. At least the commissioner would be getting a line on the "boys" and they would know they were being watched all the time. tii BACK-Marto Peek of 2311.5.
