THE BAKERSHELD CALIFORNIAN, TV WEEK, AUVUST 24, 1973 KEN LYNCH: A TOUGH GUY SURROUNDED BY FLOWERS Ken Lynch, veteran radio, motion picture and television actor whose face is: familiar to millions of viewers across the nation, appears as the tough-talking Detective Grover on NBC's McClood. Although Ken Lynch's name may not be in the average household's conversation repertoire, his hard-bitten face and gravel voice are familiar to viewers who see him regularly as a tough guy on TV. In the last year, however, Lynch has been featured in a semi- regular role as Detective Grover on NBC's McCloud segments of the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie. He still plays the tough-talking character but he's now the side of the law as Chief Peter Clifford's (J.D. Cannon) no-nonsense aide.

Last season Lynch appeared in eight of the nine episodes filmed. The face and the voice are fortunate attributes that have resulted in steady work via radio, movies and TV for 35 years. "Practically all my professional career I've been cast as the bad guy, except for a smattering of detectives," said Lynch. "Now, as I'm getting older, they will occasionally cast me'as a father or even cast me in a comedy. I had parts in The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Lucy Show, and a really good one in All in the Family." In All in the Family Lynch played a refrigerator repairman in ah event told from three points of view, giving him the chance to be tough, tender and non-commital all in the same part.

Although acting has been good to Lynch, there are times when work doesn't come in. To ensure a steady income, Lynch invested his money in a business. Despite his tough exterior, Lynch is the owner of a flower shop in North Hollywood, Calif. He said: "In acting, you just can't predict the jobs that will come along; If you could, you could budget." So a few years ago I bought a flower shop so the income would be more steady." Lynch took extensive courses in floral arranging and design; arranging for weddings and selecting the appropriate flowers for church and reception and servicing the wedding. "Actually, servicing' a wedding is like ordering flowers for a studio set," he said.

The'flower business has its disadvantages. Lynch said: "Probably the only drawback is getting down to the flower mart at 3 AM to order fresh flowers. Fresh flowers have to be ordered three times a week, so when I'm not acting, the call is earlier for the mart than McCloud set." Despite his image of a tough guy, Lynch is excited about his business venture. It has its advantages. He said: "People get a kick out of seeing me iarrive with flowers.

They always wonder what an actor is doing at the door delivering flowers." 15.
