Quirk gained such a large advan' tage during the first mile that Lundgoot and Stowell, who started from scratch, could not overcome the distance in the later stages of the race. They then settled down to fight it out for second place, and the Judges ruled they crossed the finish line at the same time. The ice was in good condition and a large crowd saw the contests.
