In many medical fields the work of Dr. Smith was well known, but he won his greatest fame for his studies of Texas cattle fever. Finds Insects Carry Disease. This was the first proof ever given that insect hosts are the essential intermediate agencies in the spread of several diseases.

It blazed the way for the explanation of what then were the mysteries of malaria, yellow fever, and African sleeping sickness. Next to the discovery of the means of transmissoin of Texas cattle fever, his best known research was the differentiation of bovine from human tubercle bacilli in 1896. Dr. Smith's discovery played a far-reaching part tn present day control of tuberculosis. In 1894 he discovered what physicians state was probably the first example of experimental disease due to vitamin deficiency.

His early discoveries were of use in the control of diphtheria. Former Government Man. Born at Albany. N. educated at Cornell, he was connected with the bureau of animal industry, Washington, and professor at Columbian, now George Washington university.

From 1S95 to 1914 he was at Harvard. At the same time he directed the antitoxin and vaccine laboratory of the Massachusetts board of health. He was a director of the Carnegie Institution, a scientific director of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research from its beginning, later becoming vice president and last year, on the death of the great Baltimore scientist. Dr. William H.

Welch, succeeded to the presidency. Eleven universities bestowed upon him honorary degrees; medical societies all over the world voted him medals; 13 American medical bodits and 11 foreign ones counted him a member. realized he had been poisoned. Glasshaga, who was 88 years old, died Sunday in St. Luke's hospital after a brief illness. She and Mr. Glasshaga celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving day. Insisting on leaving her room for a family party, she became ill and was ordered to the hospital the same day.
