Poge 8-The Gallup MM lixfeptndent-August 1, 1975-Section Queen Contestants Will Compete By ED PLACENCIO GALLUP (Staff)- Along with the excitement and adventure of the NAATIONAL High School Rodeo comes the beauty and pageantry of the high school competition between rodeo queens. The queen contest will feature 30 contestants from around the county and the week long event will culminate in the crowning of the winner on Sunday the 10th just piror to the finals of the rodeo competition. Mrs. Georgia Lynch of Gallup is one of the major coordinators of the activities of the rodeo queen contestants. Mrs.

Lynch along with Manuel Gonzales will be co chairman of the jud- ing of the queens. Twenty-eight rodeo states as well as one province of Canada will be represented. During the week's proceedings four chaperones will accompany the girls around town and wherever else they might go. The queens will be judged in three different categories with WELCOME TO THE Notional High School RODEO See Us For Quality Navajo-Hopi And Zuni Jewelry ALSO Rugs Cradle Boards Baskets Kachinas Sand Paintings Pottery WHOLESALE AND RETAIL SONNY TURPEN TRADING POST Downtonw Gallup I 213 So. The three categories for which each contestant is to be judged are horsemanship; personality and appearance; and conduct and manner. Judges for the event are all notables in the rodeo world. Two people will pass down judgment in the horsemanship contest. Fern Sawyer of Nogale, N.M. and Leroy Cosper of Cortez, Colo, will be on hand to assess each girl's ability in handling her horse.

Fern Sawyer has along list of fine rodeo credentials including the 1947 title of All Around World Champion Cowgirl. She is a dedicated backer of the New Mexico High School Rodeo Association and has organized many worthwhile rodeo projects. Ruth Grant, presently one of the area's finer woman rodeo competitors will also be a judge for the contest but she will determine the girl's finer qualities in the capacity of personality and appearance judge. Along with Miss Grant will be Earl Stewart of Gallup to help judge in this particular category. The third category covers wide range of things from conduct and manner to pose and personality.

Judges of this group will not be disclosed until after the rodeo is finished so that queen contestants will not know who the judges are. This should keep the girls on their toes at all times. A set of four chaperones namely Mrs. Georgia Lynch, secretry to the Gallup McKinley County Agent; Libby Lovejoy, the reigning Miss Louisiana, Peggy Grissom, the 1974 New Mexico High School queen; and Jewel Kay Clark, the 1975 run- nerup in the New Mexico High School competition. Miss Clark of Gallup knows quite a bit about the queen competition as she has been in numerous queen contests.

Her lists of credentials include: first runnerup in state high school competition, first runnerup in the Gallup Junior Miss contest to the eventual state winner, and being voted Miss Congeniality in the Miss Rodeo New Mexico contest. Since state high school rodeos are not held in every state of the union there are only 28 states and two Canadian provinces represented each year. This year 29 girls from as far away as Wisconsin, Louisiana, and the province of Alberta, Canada are coming. The other Canadian province didnt' provide a queen contestant but will still be sending a team. The location of the National High School Rodeo is switched every year, and Gallup is quite fortunate to land the National High School Rodeo which only comes to New Mexico every 30 years.

It may not be back for even longer should any other states join the circuit. Local merchants and others from around the country will be responsible for the many gifts given to each of the contestants. For example, Mr. Gilbert Or- tega is donating chokers, and Mathew's Furniture will be giving a lane cedar chest for all of the queen candidates. Diane Ferguson, Wash.
