Opera Review Mozart's 'Cosi Fan Tutte' Delightful Sty BONNlli Cily lf Editor SANTA a good tape goose is good for (he gander is good for opera (overs in Cosi Fan Tutte at the Santa Fe Opera phis summer. Mozart's light opera a "Women Are Like That" has its serious moments land is as meaningful, or more KM, in these days of women's lib I'as it was when he wrote it in the century. At first glance it might seem that the men have the upper- hand, playing a trick on two sisters, Dorabella and Fiordiligi, and winning, showing that the women are fickle and frivolous. But womenhavc their say too. in this opera in the person of Despina who is shrewd and clever but practical and wise as well.

"Perish the thought of a man who is true. Do unto them as they do unto you!" and "Pay them in kind when they flirt and philander. Sauce for the goose is the same for the gander." JOANNA BRUNO as Depina in Mozart's COS! FAN TUTTE declared her lack of faith in men. Performances of the opera continue Saturday night; also, Cosi Fan Tutte will be presented July 30, August 9, 14 and 22. (Ken Howard Photo) When one of the sisters asks her, as the proverbial plot thickens, if it is possible to love two men, she says, "Sound exciting!" The second sister calls De- the chamber maid, and yearns "for a horse and a man I can trust." "The horse I can vouch for," Despina responds.

And so the opera goes, for three hours of bright comedy accomapnied by magnificent music in the Santa Fe Opera House (that alone is worth the trip if you've never seen it.) In fact, if you haven't been to an opera at all, this is the way to go. It's sung in English, light, and entertaining. The opening performance was last Saturday and another show is this Saturday, followed by July 30, Aug. 9, 14 and 22. Ferrando, played by John Walker, and Guglielmo, played by William Parker in July to be played by Brent Elles in August are captivating in their roles as Italian lovers and in disguise as wealthy Albanians seeking the sisters' love.

They and the sisters, played by Ellen Shade and Janice Felty (to be replaced by Maria Ewing in August) sing duets throughout the opera and are perfectly complemented. William Dooley is a lovable Don Alfonso who proposed the wager to his friends and gets everybody back to his rightful lover in the end. Again a superb voice marked by excellent acting. Joanna Bruno as Despina completes the cast that is truly all-star. John Mauceri conducts the orchestra with Robert Baustian filling in for him on July 30.

The performances are directed by Richard Pealman and the striking, colorful, changing set and costumes are by Lara Schultz with lighting designed by Georg Schreiber. GARY, Ind.
