Is his or her sleeping schedule, for night or nap, shot to pieces? Does his toileting seem to be a total failure. Do you feel, on the whole, a sense of inadequacy in the way you are handling his routines? Does it seem that you are getting no results? Or, worse, does it seem as though you are getting bad resultssuch as crying, and resisting, and stubbornness for all your effort at training? Naturally there are various reasons why you may be unsuccessful, but just now there are two that I know you would do well to consider. The, first is the matter of praise and blame, and pleasantness and unpleasantness.

The baby's and the little child's happiness depend greatly upon youyour praise and pleasantness are something they love and try to win. If their sleep, their eating, and their toileting are associated with pleasantness. if their efforts are rewarded with praise. you are on the road to success. Blame and disapproval are disconcerting and discouraging to them, and are often the chief obstacle to success.

The other reason for your lack of results in training may be because these routines are for the baby associated with rush and hurry, and the impatience which follows in their train. The sense of ease and repose that comes with a leisurely, quiet handling of routines paves the way for success and for actual pleasure in the doing. And this applies to all the routinesto eating, to bathing, to getting' ready for nap, and night sleep, to dressing, and to tolleting. Hurry!" is a devastating word to use to a young child. Try out these two suggestions and see if they don't help a lot.

EConyriztit: 1935: By Chicairo TribuneN. Y. News Syndicate, Inc. Wifh New Dayfime Skirts Shorter, Ankles Musf Be Trim Skirt lengths: Ten to eleven Inches off the floor for daytime wear. Evening frocks show a front shortening with a considerable glimpse of ankle.

This Is the latest hemline news, which means a lot to us in this other branch of pictorial appeal, leg and ankle interviews, just to see what shape the nether limbs have been assuming behind the longer skirt Ten and eleven Inches from the ground is quite an uplift, providing quite a peepshow area for 'em as peeps at ankles, as who doesn't? And the signs all point to an appreciable further up-trend of the hemline. So our business is to be ready with the slender leg and ankle when the moment arrives. The truth is that the moment Is always with us for a good leg and ankle showing. Long skirt or not, when one sits the picture is marred or beautified by the ankle trend. Incidentally, in the interests of sitting prettier and making the legs more pictorial, when you cross your knees, which you'll do even though Dame Grundy argues nice little girls do not do it, don't cross them below the knees.

Cross them, instead, well above the knee. It makes a great deal of difference in the way the skirt drapes and allows for the down slant of the lug. It also keeps your under knee from bulging the calf of the other leg forward and making it look thicker than It actually may be. The idea is to let both legs drop down easily in the same direction. Not, as so often happens, letting one leg fly out wide in an ungainly criss-cross, Better not CONQUERING CONTRACT By P.

Counteracting Largish Scores. Dear Mr. NevilleIf unusual hands interest you, have a look at this one, which nearly gave me, sitting South, acute appendicitis two nights ago. The situation was aggravated because the hand came at the end of a hard fought rubber, both sides vulnerable, with my partner and I needing a slam to counteract some largish scores above the line. My partner bid in a rosy haze, staring hypnotized at her hand, and I with a sense of impending doom: IS THIS A TRAGEDY or: A FARCE? For today's hand we must again thank Mr.

If your partner has a queen and a jack or their equivalent, you wish to play at three-notrumps. If he has not even these feeble values, the hand is a bad game speculation.

If he can bid any suit except diamonds, you will slam in his suit. The actual bidding would go: Two no-trumps, three diamonds only because it is a six-card suit, three hearts, three no-trumps, pass. When North does not rebid to slam or pre. pare a slam development by bidding four diamonds to coax some constructive response, South knows that his diamond suit has not hit the spot at all and that North is signing off at the game level He has made one further movea plea for raise in hearts in case South has four of them. Failing that, South has no justification for rebidding diamonds and thereby driving the bidding beyond three no trumps.

Game in no trumps is made only because one suit is evenly splitclubs. Rather a lucky hand in three no trumps. Had South had one less diamond he would have had to pass. There would then be a far greater risk of the opposition running four diamond tricks after knocking out the ace. Give South .1 10 in diamonds and he will respond to two no trumps, and the risk in the diamond suit will no longer exist.

Change North's queen of hearts to a smaller card, and one club would be a good opening bid to coax a oneover-one response. The hand will then need a purely natural response for game purposes.
